Severn School is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Daniel Keller as Middle School Head, effective July 1, 2014. Mr. Keller replaces Dr. Gray Smith, who leaves Severn at the end of June to become head of Harford Day School. Dr. Smith's departure was announced in November.

A Baltimore native, Mr. Keller graduated from Towson University with a B.S. in English and earned two master’s degrees from Towson and Johns Hopkins University, respectively. He also holds professional certification from Johns Hopkins in educational leadership for independent schools.

Dan Keller is currently chair of the English department of Severn’s Middle School, and has taught and coached at Severn since 2010. Prior to teaching at Severn, Dan taught and coached at the Barrie School in Silver Spring, and St. Michael’s Country Day School in Newport, RI, and was an adjunct English Professor at Towson University.

“While Mr. Keller’s experience and talents are extensive, it is his love and appreciation for kids, the learning process, and independent school life, that truly impressed those who have worked with him and the search committee,” commented Severn School Head of School Doug Lagarde. “In addition, his educational philosophy echoes the foundational principles of Severn’s mission.”

More than 60 candidates applied for the position. A search committee made up of faculty, trustees, parents, and students unanimously selected Mr. Keller for the role. Nearly 200 boys and girls are currently enrolled in Severn’s Middle School, comprised of grades 6 through 8.

“Clearly, Severn’s Middle School is in a good place,” reflected Mr. Keller. “Going forward, I see the division growing from that strong foundation. An excellent middle school is lead with students at the center, showcases quality teaching and learning, and exudes a caring culture, where faculty are a supporting presence and take time to know and value each student.”

Founded in 1914, Severn School is celebrating its centennial year. 2013 marked the merger of Severn and the former Chesapeake Academy, making the combined school the largest independent school in Anne Arundel County with more than 800 students in preschool through grade 12.
