STEM

At Severn, STEM is not a program only for select students. Instead,
every student has the opportunity to take courses in science,
technology, engineering and math. This accessibility allows students
to discover new passions or embark on an in-depth exploration of
a particular area of interest. Through participation in academic
classes, clubs, independent study or special projects, students can
pursue their passion for STEM at the deepest levels.

STEM IN THE CURRICULUM

Classroom Learning

Academic Classes

Classes in STEM topics are available to students at the College-Prep, Honors, and AP levels. In addition to standard academic offerings such as Chemistry and Geometry, students can choose from classes such as Forensics, Statistical Reasoning in Sports, Introductory Robotics, and Cybersecurity.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY - Engineering

Severn is certified with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), a program designed to develop a problem-solving mindset in students by engaging in compelling, real-world challenges. The curriculum currently offers four PLTW classes – Principles of Engineering (I & II) and Introduction to Engineering Design (I & II).

VAN ENEY '09 FELLOWS PROGRAM

Through the Van Eney ’09 Fellows Program, seniors at Severn School have the opportunity to pursue a year-long passion project that reflects their growing personal and intellectual interests.

The Fellows projects represent learning for learning’s sake, as students explore new ideas and interests for the purest reasons – gaining knowledge and experience. Throughout the year-long process, seniors are supported by mentors and industry experts. They work towards key milestones, and adapting the project in response to the inevitable challenges they face is as important to the learning as the final product. To learn more, click here.

Malone Schools Online Network

The Malone Schools Online Network (MSON) provides motivated upper-level students with a variety of academically challenging courses that enhance Severn School's existing curriculum. These interactive seminars bring students from across the country together with dedicated teachers in real time. Recent course offerings include: Advanced Microeconomics, Botany, Introduction to Organic Chemistry, Differential Equations, and The Science and Ethics of Sports Performance.
