CONVERSATIONAL BOOKS
Books can be powerful tools for introducing children to complex ideas and starting purposeful conversations. With so many books out there, though, it can be hard to know where to start, so our librarians have curated these resources and book lists to help.

  • All Kinds of Families, by Mary Ann Hoberman (PS - Gr 3)

    In rollicking rhythm and rhyme, this book shows readers that families, large and small, real and fantastic, are all around us. From celery stalks to pocket change, from beach shells to sticks and stones in the yard, the objects we group together can form families, just like the ones we belong to.   • Fred Stays with Me, by Nancy Coffelt (K - Gr 3)

    A little girl stays part of each week at her mom’s and part at her dad’s. No matter where she is, her dog, Fred, stays, too. But Fred has issues. At her mom’s he barks at the neighbor’s dog . . a lot. At her dad’s he steals socks . . . all of them. He can be masterful at making messes, too. Now neither parent wants Fred to stay at their home. Nancy Coffelt takes a realistic look at a child who has learned to navigate the demands of her parents’ divorce with relative ease but relies on—and asserts her need for—the friend who is a constant in the midst of all the change.   • Stella Brings the Family, by Miriam B. Schiffer (K - Gr 2)

    Stella's class is having a Mother's Day celebration, but what's a girl with two daddies to do? It's not that she doesn't have someone who helps her with her homework, or tucks her in at night. Stella has her Papa and Daddy who take care of her, and a whole gaggle of other loved ones who make her feel special and supported every day. She just doesn't have a mom to invite to the party. Fortunately, Stella finds a unique solution to her party problem in this sweet story about love, acceptance, and the true meaning of family.
  • The Family Book, by Todd Parr (PS - Gr 2)

    There are so many different types of families, and The Family Book celebrates them all in a funny, silly, and reassuring way. Todd Parr includes adopted families, step-families, one-parent families, and families with two parents of the same sex, as well as the traditional nuclear family. His quirky humor and bright, childlike illustrations will make children feel good about their families. Parents and teachers can use this book to encourage children to talk about their families and the different kinds of families that exist.
  • The List of Things that Will Not Change, by Rebecca Stead (Gr 4 - Gr 7)

    After her parents' divorce, Bea's life became different in many ways. But she can always look back at the list she keeps in her green notebook to remember the things that will stay the same. The first and most important: Mom and Dad will always love Bea, and each other.

    When Dad tells Bea that he and his boyfriend, Jesse, are getting married, Bea is thrilled.   • Eyes that Kiss in the Corners, by Joanna Ho (K - Gr 3)

  • Ghost Boys, by Jewell Parker Rhodes (Gr 4 - Gr 7)

  • Your Name is a Song, by Milah Thompkins-Bigelow (PS - Gr 3)

  • Front Desk, by Kelly Yang (Gr 4 - Gr 6)

  • Pie in the Sky, by Remy Lai (Gr 3 - Gr 6)

    When eleven-year-old Jingwen moves to a new country, he feels like he's landed on Mars. School is torture, making friends is impossible since he doesn’t speak English, and he's often stuck looking after his (extremely irritating) little brother, Yanghao.

    To distract himself from the loneliness, Jingwen daydreams about making all the cakes on the menu of Pie in the Sky, the bakery his father had planned to open before he unexpectedly passed away. The only problem is his mother has laid down one major rule: the brothers are not to use the oven while she's at work. As Jingwen and Yanghao bake elaborate cakes, they'll have to cook up elaborate excuses to keep the cake making a secret from Mama.

    Told in prose and graphic novel elements, this middle-grade novel is about a boy's immigration experience, his annoying little brother, and their cake-baking hijinks!
     
  • Santiago's Road Home, by Alexandra Diaz (Gr 4 - Gr 7)

    A young boy gets detained by ICE while crossing the border from Mexico to the United States in this timely and unflinching novel by award-winning author Alexandra Diaz.

    The bed creaks under Santiago’s shivering body. They say a person’s life flashes by before dying. But it’s not his whole life. Just the events that led to this. The important ones, and the ones Santiago would rather forget.

    The coins in Santiago’s hand are meant for the bus fare back to his abusive abuela’s house. Except he refuses to return; he won’t be missed. His future is uncertain until he meets the kind, maternal María Dolores and her young daughter, Alegría, who help Santiago decide what comes next: He will accompany them to el otro lado, the United States of America.   • The Name Jar, by Yangsook Choi (K - Gr 2)

    Being the new kid in school is hard enough, but what about when nobody can pronounce your name? Having just moved from Korea, Unhei is anxious that American kids will like her. So instead of introducing herself on the first day of school, she tells the class that she will choose a name by the following week.

    Her new classmates are fascinated by this no-name girl and decide to help out by filling a glass jar with names for her to pick from. But while Unhei practices being a Suzy, Laura, or Amanda, one of her classmates comes to her neighborhood and discovers her real name and its special meaning.

    On the day of her name choosing, the name jar has mysteriously disappeared. Encouraged by her new friends, Unhei chooses her own Korean name and helps everyone pronounce it—Yoon-Hey.

  • All the Way to the Top, by Annette Bay Pimentel (Gr 1 - Gr 3)

    Jennifer Keelan was determined to make a change―even if she was just a kid. She never thought her wheelchair could slow her down, but the way the world around her was built made it hard to do even simple things. Like going to school, or eating lunch in the cafeteria.

  • El Deafo, by Cece Bell (Gr 2 - Gr 6)

    In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful and very awkward hearing aid. The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear (including some things she wasn't intended to hear), but it also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become "El Deafo, Listener for All." More importantly, Cece declares a place for herself in the world and finds the friend she's longed for.
  • My Three Best Friends and Me, Zulay, by Cari Best (K - Gr 3)

    Zulay and her three best friends are all in the same first grade class and study the same things, even though Zulay is blind. When their teacher asks her students what activity they want to do on Field Day, Zulay surprises everyone when she says she wants to run a race. With the help of a special aide and the support of her friends, Zulay does just that.
  • Out of My Mind, by Sharon Draper (Gr 4 - Gr 6)

    Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise.   • Rescue and Jessica: A Life Changing Friendship, by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes (K - Gr 3)

  • We're All Wonders, by R. J. Palacio (PK - Gr 1)

    Countless fans have asked R. J. Palacio to write a book for younger readers. With We’re All Wonders, she makes her picture-book debut as both author and artist, with a spare, powerful text and striking, richly imagined illustrations. Palacio shows readers what it’s like to live in Auggie’s world—a world in which he feels like any other kid, but he’s not always seen that way.

  • Wonder, by R. J. Palacio (Gr 4 - Gr 7)

    August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a severe facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school.

    Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon switches to include the perspectives of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These voices converge to portray a community as it struggles with differences, and challenges readers, both young and old, to wonder about the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness. Auggie is a hero for the ages, one who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

  • A Ride to Remember, by Sharon Langley and Amy Nathan (Gr 1 - Gr 4)

    A Ride to Remember tells how a community came together—both black and white—to make a change. When Sharon Langley was born in the early 1960s, many amusement parks were segregated, and African-American families were not allowed entry. This book reveals how in the summer of 1963, due to demonstrations and public protests, the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Maryland became desegregated and opened to all for the first time. Co-author Sharon Langley was the first African-American child to ride the carousel. This was on the same day of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Langley’s ride to remember demonstrated the possibilities of King’s dream. This book includes photos of Sharon on the carousel, authors’ notes, a timeline, and a bibliography.
  • Bowwow Powwow: Bagosenjigeniimi'idim, by Brenda J. Child (K - Gr 3)

  • Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, by Kevin Noble Maillard (PS - Gr 3)

  • Henry's Freedom Box, by Ellen Levine (Gr 2 - Gr 5)

    • A stirring, dramatic story of a slave who mails himself to freedom by a Jane Addams Peace Award-winning author and a Coretta Scott King Award-winning artist.

      Henry Brown doesn't know how old he is. Nobody keeps records of slaves' birthdays. All the time he dreams about freedom, but that dream seems farther away than ever when he is torn from his family and put to work in a warehouse.     Quilt making has been passed down through eight generations of Soonie's family. Messages were carefully stitched into each quilt, called a Show Way, mapping the family's journey from slavery to the present day. Includes an interview with Jacqueline Woodson.
     
  • Stella Starlight, by Sharon Draper (Gr 4 - Gr 8)

    When the Ku Klux Klan's unwelcome reappearance rattles Stella's segregated southern town, bravery battles prejudice in this Depression-era tour de force from Sharon Draper, the New York Times bestselling author of Out of My Mind.

    Stella lives in the segregated South; in Bumblebee, North Carolina, to be exact about it. Some stores she can go into. Some stores she can't. Some folks are right pleasant. Others are a lot less so. To Stella, it sort of evens out, and heck, the Klan hasn't bothered them for years.     Too often, Native American history is treated as a finished chapter instead of relevant and ongoing. This companion book to the award-winning We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga offers readers everything they never learned in school about Native American people's past, present, and future.
