Sander Beck already had two in his collection, but they never felt like this.
Beck walked off the mound pumping his fist after throwing his third career no-hitting, while pushing Severn to a 3-0 victory over Severna Park yesterday in the Severna Park/North County Spring Tournament.
"Against some of the (MIAA) B Conference schools, it's sort of lesser competition than Severna Park," said Beck (1-0), who will pitch for Maryland next season. "But against a big state school like Severna Park - a 3A, a 4A school - it gets better every time."
Beck mixed an 89-mph fastball with his changeup and curve ball to collect eight strikeouts and keep the Severna Park hitters off-balanced. He retired the Falcons in order in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings.
Beck hit three batters and walked two, but out of a couple jams to keep the Falcons (1-1) off the board.
"He's a special kid. He really is," Severn coach Andy Canterna said. "He wanted this game really bad."
Jeremy Holbrook gave Severn a 1-0 lead with an RBI ground out in the first inning, and Chase Strom added a two-run single in the fifth - one of three hits for the Admirals (2-1).
Severna Park starter Taylor Williams struck out two and allowed a hit and an unearned run in four innings for the loss.
"When we don't get any hits or take advantage of guys getting on base, we're not going to get too many wins this year," Severna Park coach Jim McCandless said.
Beck walked Cory Jensen in the fourth and Alex Ramsey followed with a one-out pop-up that fell to the left of Severn third baseman Sam Wachs for an error. Beck got Adam Senholzi to ground out to end the inning.
Beck struck out Pat O'Keefe with a runner on third base to get out of trouble in the fifth inning, and he caught Chris Bonomi with two outs in the sixth to strand runners on first and second.
"I was really confident," said Beck, who added a double in the seventh inning. "Once I saw in the first inning that I could get my fastball out there and not be too worried about throwing on the corners, I felt really confident."
Wachs reached on an error and advanced to third in the first inning, and Holbrook's grounder to first base put Severn ahead.
Greg Monahan relived Williams in the fifth inning and quickly fell behind. He walked the bases loaded, and Strom drove a single down the left-field line on a drawn-in infield to score Wachs and Beck.
That was more than enough for Beck.
After escaping the sixth unscathed, he struck out the side in the seventh. Beck caught Jason Basara and Colin Ware looking before throwing a fastball past Tyler Bennett to close out his no-hitter.
"In the seventh inning, I realized it could really happen," Beck said. "It felt good to end the game on a good note, on my terms."
