Planned Giving

Planned gifts can provide long-lasting support for our organization while enjoying financial benefits for yourself.

Planned gifts at Severn School play a crucial role in ensuring the school’s long-term success and sustainability. All planned gifts, regardless of size, help secure a brighter future for the Severn School community. These contributions are directed towards the school’s general endowment fund. Donors can further align a planned gift by designating it towards a specific area of Severn’s endowed funds, such as: Financial Aid, Faculty Professional Development, Student Programs, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Let your “why” create a legacy and a testament to all that Severn School has given you and be part of all that Severn will be in the future!

Let’s talk about how a planned gift to Severn School can fit into your financial plan and charitable giving goals.

A Legacy of Giving: One Alum’s Enduring Connection to Severn School

DONOR STORY: LORRAINE D. JOHNSON

Growing up in Pasadena, this dedicated Severn alumna learned early on that hard work and generosity go hand in hand. From an early age, her parents instilled in her the importance of academic excellence—an “A” was the only acceptable grade—and philanthropy. “When I was little—maybe five years old—they gave me an allowance of 25 cents a week. A dime of it went in the collection plate on Sunday,” she recalls. This foundational lesson made giving second nature.

Her journey at Severn School began in the seventh grade after her parents made sacrifices to provide a better education for her and her sister. She vividly remembers the campus in its earlier days, recalling, “The top floor of Teel Hall had already been condemned. We could only use the first two floors!” Today, she marvels at the school’s state-of-the-art facilities.

Her experience at Severn shaped not just her education but also her understanding of the power of community. “The people at Severn were the best thing about it! Yes, the work was hard, but having good friends and teachers who genuinely cared made everything worth the effort.” This value carried into her career, where she thrived, as one of the few women in investment and financial services field.

Now, 45 years since she left campus, she remains deeply committed to Severn through her membership in the 1914 Society. Her planned gift, structured through her will and life insurance, ensures that future generations will benefit from the same transformative education. “Severn was and is my home. It’s where I made great friendships, got a wonderful education, played softball, and so much more.”

Her advice for those considering a planned gift? “Don’t feel like you’re too young, or the amount is too small to make a difference. Every dollar counts.”
