Alumni Snapshots: Q&A with Arthur Egeli '82

Alumni Director Carrie MacVean Grimes ’91 loved catching up with Severn alumnus Arthur Egeli '82 this fall,  just following the release of his new film, Murder on the Cape. Egeli was busy at his art gallery Egeli Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he lives with his wife Heather and his two children, ages 9 and 13.
What kind of work do you do?
I am an artist in the American Impressionist tradition, and also a filmmaker. I'm currently working at my gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts. I'm a third generation artist. My father, mother, grandparents and sisters are also all artists.  I have a large body of work — it's essential to always have new works, and always have something interesting to show your collectors. I love painting — I love what I do.

Tell us about your work in film.
I've recently completed a film called "Murder on the Cape" which is based on the book "Invisible Eden" by Maria Flook. I was the producer, director, and co-writer. It's a fictional representation of a very sensational story.

How did you develop an interest in film?
My first interest in film was as a student of Nancy Osius Zimmerman at Severn. She was my newspaper advisor, and she encouraged me to engage in spontaneous creativity. Nancy understood creativity and encouraged that in me.  I wrote my first screenplay, "Hands of a Dancer" and that led to a creative arts scholarship at the University of Maryland. Since that time I have sold a dozen screenplays and this is my fifth feature film.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
You get to use your imagination in a child-like way, and let your imagination flow — as a writer and artist I practice using my imagination every day.

How did Severn prepare you for life?
At Severn I was prepared with the lifelong skill of decision making — I learned how to weigh decisions and overcome obstacles. I learned that being true to myself was worth it, but that I needed to be prepared. I remember a "Career Day" that Severn organized for us as students, and a speaker came and said, "You can do whatever you want to, as long as you can make a living doing it." That really stuck with me. Also, many of our teachers had lived through World War II and possessed a sense of leadership and personal confidence that was infectious. We believed they could get through anything.

What's a favorite Severn memory?
I loved after school activities and communities with teachers, where you could really connect around hobbies and interests. I also have happy memories of shooting baskets with teachers.

What advice would you give to the Class of 2018?
You may not know what your dream is yet, but if you do, you're lucky! Go for it and don't give up.
