Upper School Course Selection

On Thursday, all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students met with their advisors to discuss the process of selecting courses for next year. It is important that parents and students review two items – the Course Selection Sheet and associated instructions - that were distributed to students during this meeting.

The Upper School Curriculum Guide is available online rather than being distributed as a printed document – saving more than 4,200 sheets of paper! Students and parents can view the 2008-2009 Curriculum Guide by clicking here. The guide is also available as a Quicklink on the Severn website.

Each student’s course sheet begins with a chart that lists the courses for which he or she has been recommended, including decisions for honors or AP placement.

Students should indicate his or her ideal schedule for next year by filling in the shaded portion of the sheet, taking into account the recommended courses and adding his or her top elective choices. Because many elective classes are quite popular and students cannot count on being placed in all of their top choices, students should also provide a complete list of backup elective choices, in order of preference.

Finally, a space at the bottom of the sheet encourages students to provide any additional information that may be helpful to Mr. Turner and Mr. McNamara as they develop student schedules over the summer.

Course selection sheets for all returning Upper School students are due on April 25; each sheet must be signed by both the student and a parent before it is returned to the advisor. While there is no benefit to submitting the sheet early, any students who provide their materials after this deadline may find it difficult to secure their top elective choices.

Current eighth grade students will receive their course selection materials on May 1, and Mr. Turner will begin working with all newly accepted upper school students in early May.

Parents and students who have questions about the course selection process as a whole should begin by contacting the student’s advisor, though queries can also be directed to Academic Dean John Turner.
