Erin Domenech Named Boys Swimming Coach of the Year by The Capital Gazette

Erin Domenech, Severn Varsity Swimming Head Coach, has been named Coach of the Year for 2023-24 by The Capital Gazette.
Domenech led the Varsity Boys Swimming team to a perfect regular season and claimed the B-Conference Championship. This talented squad of Admirals put an exclamation point on an already successful season with a dominant performance at the MIAA B-Conference Championship Meet in February. Severn won two of the three relays and earned three individual gold medals, ultimately tallying nearly 100 points more than the second-place finishers.

"This team has incredible talent and determination," said Domenech. "They also had versatility and depth of talent across different disciplines."

Domenech celebrated another milestone this season after earning her 100th win with Severn Swimming on January 12. Domenech just concluded her tenth year coaching the swim program at Severn.

In addition to winning the championship, 2023-24 was a record-setting year for several individual swimmers. Court Barrett '26 set a new school record for the 100m backstroke at 54.21 seconds. In doing so, he beat his own previous school record, which he had set just a few months before. Additionally, the relay team of Barrett, Harlan Erskine '25, Rhett Walker '27, and Cal Olenec '26 set a new school record in the 200m freestyle relay, coming in at 1:38.38. They also managed to beat their own time of 1:38.62, which they had turned in earlier in the season.

"Breaking school records is a significant accomplishment and speaks directly to the caliber of athletes who were on this team," said Domenech. With so many talented swimmers returning, there is much to be excited about for next season.

In other highlights for the Varsity Boys, swimmers Erskine, and Barrett were both named All-County Capital Gazette and named to the MIAA All-Conference B team. Olenec and Walker were named to the MIAA All-Conference B team as well.
