Mike Glasby Earns Coach of the Year Honors

Mike Glasby, Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball team has been named both MIAA Boys Basketball Coach of the Year and the Capital Gazette Co-Coach of the Year.
Under Glasby’s leadership, the talented 2023-24 Varsity squad brought the MIAA B-Conference Champions title home to Severn for the first time in three decades, finishing 24-6 on the season overall and remaining undefeated in conference play. They also established a new program record – a 19-game win streak. After a December 23 loss in a tournament in DC, the Varsity team did not lose a game until March 2, when they fell to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School during the second round of the Maryland Private School State Basketball Tournament. The Boys Basketball JV squad also defended their title, winning the B-Conference Championship for the second year in a row.

Glasby, who has been Severn’s Head Coach since the 2018-19 season, credits the full Boys Basketball coaching staff with this recognition. “All of the coaches gave great effort, starting with the off-season training and throughout the entire winter season. I’m proud to share these accolades with such a dedicated group of coaches.”

Glasby describes this year’s Varsity team as a balanced group, with at least three players averaging double figures for the season. He also points to their overall chemistry and strong sense of team as important intangibles that contributed to their success. “Starting with summer workouts and summer league play, the players did an excellent job of playing for each other,” he said. “Our players were committed to our program standards and expectations. We mirrored that through our team defense, selflessly sharing the basketball, and high place of play.

“I was happy at how they approached working hard together in the gym,” he added. “Every single player sacrificed and shared the game.”

In addition to the excellent team play, there were also notable standout moments for individual players. In January, Senior Guard and Team Captain Kingston Price joined the short list of former Admirals with 1,000+ career points – an achievement that is even more noteworthy given that he missed a year of action due to COVID. He ended with Severn career with an impressive 1,276 total points. Price earned MIAA All-Conference B honors, and was 1st Team All-County Capital Gazette, and 1st Team Baltimore Sun All-Metro. Jacob Randall ’25 also earned MIAA All- Conference B honors and was named 2nd Team All-County Capital Gazette.

All but two of the Varsity squad are returning and Glasby is optimistic about the talent and heart that is coming into the program from both current and new Admirals entering the Upper School in 2024-25. “I’m excited to witness how the program’s success has heightened the energy around Severn basketball,” said Glasby. The future for Severn Boys Basketball is very bright, indeed.
