Ten Ways to Survive Life in Quarantine

Oscar Wilde once wrote that "Life imitates art far more than art imitates life." But there are many times when quite the opposite rings true. Last week, our 6th and 7th Grade Drama Club took the stage in Price Auditorium for their first in-person performance since — you guessed it, the 2020 COVID-19 quarantine. With smooth comedic timing and stage presence that had the audience hanging on every word, our Middle School drama troupe took us on a laughter-filled journey through our seemingly endless days at home. Bravo to our Middle School players!

Art Imitates Zoom

Under the expert guidance of Lower School Drama Director and Middle School Drama Club Advisor Ms. Holly Florian, with the help of Technical Theater Director Mr. Ralph Derbyshire, our 6th- and 7th-grade crew transformed the stage into an oversized Zoom screen. Before our young actors took their positions, the audience heard a fun spoof on the ABBA song "Mamma Mia," with the lyrics "Quarantine-a, here we go again," a perfect prelude for the strange and delightful scenes to follow.

Zoom "hosts" Elizabeth Maltz '27 and Cole Friedrich '27 introduced each scene with clever commentary and dramatic expressions as the actors described in cringingly hilarious detail the many ways they entertained themselves during quarantine. From putting on a dog musical to becoming an announcer for a made-up sport and falling in love with an inanimate object, each story was outrageously silly and completely relatable. The audience exploded with laughter through every scene.

From the Director

"After over a year of clumsily engaging students in drama and improv activities on Zoom, you cannot imagine my enthusiasm for jumping into in-person theatre! However, given the precariousness of in-person activities right now I knew to proceed with caution. Almost immediately after the overwhelming sense of joy, I panicked thinking about all of the what-ifs. What if one of the cast members gets sick? What if we have to rehearse in a hybrid setting? What if we have to 'flip the switch' and go fully remote? How can I make sure the experience is positive for everyone involved no matter what setting we are in?

When I first read this script I knew it would be perfect for this first return to middle school theatre. It is a hilarious throw-back to those early pandemic days when we were all struggling to find ways to keep ourselves occupied. Not only has this play allowed us to reflect on some of the more humorous aspects of lockdown and the ways people entertained themselves, but it also provided a simple way to rehearse safely and know that whatever state we were in by the time we got to the end of October, we would be able to present a performance." — Ms. Holly Florian

About the Arts at Severn

Our dramatic arts program offers opportunities for students to explore and express creativity both on the stage and behind the scenes. Our talented and dedicated faculty focus on much more than developing artistic ability. They work together to create a space for students to make friends, take risks, step outside of their comfort zones, and stretch the limits of their imaginations. Through the arts, our students develop a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves while having a ton of fun along the way.
