Welcome Families

A Warm Welcome to Severn School!

In just a few days, the 21-22 school year will begin. As a family new to Severn, you are prepared. You've toured our campus, met our admissions team, sent in your forms, and gathered your school supplies. But even with the best preparation, the first days and weeks of the school year can feel nerve-wracking — we've all been there! We're here to help you to shake off those nerves, get involved, and get to know our students, faculty, and staff. Welcome to Severn School!

A Program Just For You

All Severn families are included in our New Parent Program for their first year — you have likely already received a phone call from a Severn Parent Ambassador over the summer to welcome you and talk about day-to-day life at Severn. If we missed you and you have questions, please reach out to Volunteer Liaison and Severn parent Deb Smith. Other program highlights for the 21-22 school year include:
  • A Welcome to Severn Kit. Break out the maroon and white to show your Admiral spirit with a new-to-Severn welcome kit! Email Deb Smith to set up a time to pick up your kit at Alumni House on Teel Campus.
  • New Family Tent at the Welcome Back Bash (details below). Break the ice and meet other new parents, class representatives, and staff. Look for signage at the Welcome Back Bash and enjoy!
  • All You Were Afraid to Ask. A portion of our first APA meetings (details below) will be dedicated to answering new-to-Severn family questions. Come to a meeting, meet some seasoned parents, and ask away. Our APA community is eager to share their experiences with you.
We are working on building this program to meet your needs and welcome any questions, suggestions or ideas to make it better! Please email Deb Smith to share your thoughts!

Get to Know Our Community

Welcome Back Bash from 6-8:00 pm on Thursday, September 9th. One of our favorite nights of the year, the Welcome Back Bash is the first of several events to foster a sense of togetherness among the adults in our community. It is a chance for parents, alumni, faculty, and staff to bond over a shared meal and conversation while enjoying the outdoor beauty of Teel Campus. Kindly register here so we can count you in on the fun!

Grade Level Coffees. Our annual parent coffees are interactive information sessions for parents of students at every grade level. Each meeting provides a personalized forum to learn about grade-level specific topics while meeting our faculty, staff, and of course, other parents! Please check our weekly newsletter, The Binnacle, for dates and locations.

Let's Go Back to School

Our Back to School Nights are valuable opportunities to meet all of your child(ren)'s teachers, support staff, and administrators, network with other parents in your child(ren)'s grade, and build the shared community that will support our Admirals throughout their time at Severn. Each year is a new journey for our students, but also for our parents and faculty. Join us for Back to School Night to embark on this journey with clear expectations and a positive outlook for the months ahead. Please check The Binnacle for details:
  • Lower School Back to School Night and Parent Social: Thursday, September 14th from 6-9:00 pm
  • Middle School Back to School Night: Thursday, September 23rd from 7-9:30 pm
  • Upper School Back to School Night: September, 30th from 7-9:30 pm

Giving Back Has Never Been So Fun

Severn parents are amazing. They are dedicated to helping each other, our students, and our faculty through volunteer work on all levels, from leading a committee to supporting teachers in the classroom . . . while having a ton of fun! The organizing force behind that good work is the Admirals Parents' Association. As a parent of a current Severn student, you are automatically enrolled in the APA — there is no sign-up or membership fee required.

The APA typically hosts over 125 events, receptions, meetings, programs, workshops, and parent gatherings each year, both in-person and online. The APA also heads our annual Admiral Auction, which has raised over $100,000 for the past several years to support programs, fulfill teacher wish lists, and make both campuses feel like a home away from home for every Severn Admiral. Please join us for our first APA meetings this fall. Please check The Binnacle for details:
  • Chesapeake Campus, Friday: September 17th
  • Teel Campus: Wednesday, September 15th

In addition to supporting teacher and student events and activities, the APA creates a warm welcome for students and faculty throughout the changing seasons.

We Are In This Together

Everyone at Severn plays a part in guiding our students toward their fullest potential. The partnerships you form with teachers, advisors, administrators, and other parents will shape your child(ren)'s experience as they learn, grow, and discover what matters in their own lives and the world beyond our doors. We look forward to doing this important work with every family. Let's kick off a great school year, together!
