Severn to Induct Three Into Athletic Hall of Fame

Severn School is pleased to announce the induction of three alumni into its Athletic Hall of Fame: Nicholas Elsmo ’07, Joseph Morris ’08 and Frederick Weiss ‘61. This year's inductees will formally join the 130 members of Severn's Athletic Hall of Fame in a postponed ceremony to be held during the Homecoming festivities of 2021, due to the current pandemic. Every other year the Severn School Alumni Association’s Athletic Hall of Fame committee, chaired by Stacey Hendricks Manis ’81, recognizes Severn alumni who have contributed to Severn’s athletic excellence as a player, coach and/or athletic director.
Nicholas Elsmo ‘07
Elsmo was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and lacrosse during his years at Severn, serving as a captain of all three teams for six consecutive seasons during his junior and senior years.  After Severn, he attended The University of Virginia from 2007-2009 where he played lacrosse as a midfielder, and was part of the NCAA Division 1 Final Four each year. From 2009-2011 Elsmo played lacrosse at the University of Delaware where he was the team captain, and led them to consecutive CAA Conference Championships.  He was also selected to play in the USILA Senior All-Star game in 2011. While at Severn, Nick was a leader on the field — earning The Coach’s MVP Award for all three sports his senior year, and the Severn School 1923 Athletic Award upon graduation.  As a football player, he earned 1st Team All County in 2006 and 2007; as a basketball player he was selected for the Capital Gazette Senior All-Star Game.  Nick’s most impressive feats, however, were on the lacrosse field. He earned 1st Team All County and All Metro selections his junior and senior year, was named the Anne Arundel County Player of the Year in 2007, and was selected as an Under Armour All-American in 2007.  He also earned the opportunity to play for the USA Under-19 National team, where he was the leading midfield scorer and won a gold medal at the 2008 World Games in British Columbia. Nick currently lives in New York City with his fiancée Christina, and works for the private wealth management firm Fisher Investments.

Joseph Morris ‘08
Morris began sailing Optimist sailboats as a boy on the Chesapeake Bay, at Annapolis Yacht Club, and fell into the sport through a local youth program where the only goal on the water was simply to have fun. A three-time captain of the Severn sailing team, Joe led the crew to capturing both the Interscholastic Sailing Association single-handed (Cressy Trophy), and the double-handed (Mallory Trophy) national championships during his senior year. Following Severn, Morris went on to attend Yale University, where he sailed with the Bulldogs and was a four-time collegiate All-American, four-year varsity athlete, and two-time Captain of the sailing team during his junior and senior years. A stellar sailor, Morris graduated receiving the NEISA award for Sportsmanship and Competitive Achievement, as well as the D. Perry Award for Exceptional Contributions to the Yale Sailing Association. Following his graduation from Yale, Morris competed at the US Olympic Trials, and finished as the top American in the 2016 Sailing World Championships. Joe went on to train and compete on the United States Olympic Team in 2016 in Rio, where he and his partner Thomas Barrows were the sole US representatives in the Men’s two-person high performance 49er class.  Following Rio, Joe returned to Yale to help coach the sailing team before deciding to pursue a career as a professional sailor, sailing a variety of boats including J70’s, J24s and Etchells. Joe currently lives in Boston, where he splits his time between the corporate world and sailing professionally.

Frederick Weiss ‘61
Weiss led an impressive and distinctive sports career at Severn, as both a standout varsity football and varsity lacrosse player. A two-year letterwinner in football and three-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Severn, he received multiple awards, including The McCormack Unsung Hero Award for his performance on the gridiron. During his senior year, Fred served as football co-captain, as well Varsity Club President. In perhaps one of Severn’s most memorable and historic lacrosse games, Weiss netted the winning goal in a 3-2 defeat of St. Paul’s — the first victory in 24 years over St. Paul’s. At Washington College, Fred continued to play first midfield varsity lacrosse, as well as varsity soccer. He was named to the All-American lacrosse team for two consecutive years, and lettered in both sports for all four years. Fred married his college sweetheart, Alta, and they have two children and four grandchildren. Fred and Alta live in Ocean Pines, MD, for about seven months and enjoy their boating and family life. They spend the other part of the year at their condo in Colorado and continue to ski almost every day with family and ski friends
