Welcome Aboard, New Admiral Families!

We’ve all been there. Joining a new community can be exciting and nerve-wracking at once — new faces, places, and routines. As adults, we are often surprised at how quickly children and teens adjust to the unfamiliar. And that has never been more clear than watching them manage the many changes in our world since the COVID-19 outbreak. Regardless of whether we gather in person or digitally, our priority is to make sure that every student feels known and valued from their first day as a Severn Admiral. We want you, the new parents in our community, to feel that same sense of belonging. We are eager to get to know you and want to make sure you have everything you need for a happy and successful school year!

Join Us for Coffee and Conversation

Our annual parent coffees are interactive information sessions for parents of students at every grade level. Each meeting provides a personalized forum to learn about grade-level specific topics while meeting our faculty, staff and of course, other parents! For the 20-21 school year, our parent coffees will be hosted virtually on Zoom. Bring your own coffee and treats, and we'll make sure all of your questions are answered. Please check our weekly newsletter, The Binnacle, on mySevern for upcoming dates.

Go Back to School...Virtually!

While we'd much rather show you our classrooms and talk with you in person, this year's back-to-school nights will be hosted virtually on Zoom. You'll meet your child's teachers, learn about routines and curriculum, and hear from Head of School Doug Lagarde and our division administrators. It's possible for dates to change in the coming weeks, so make sure to check The Binnacle for Zoom links and updates.
  • Lower School: Thursday, September 17th
  • Middle School: Thursday, September 24th
  • Upper School: Thursday, October 1st

Get Involved, Have Fun & Give Back

All current parents are members of the Admirals Parents' Association — no sign-up or membership fee required! The APA typically hosts over 125 events, receptions, meetings, programs, workshops, and parent gatherings each year. Severn parents are dedicated to helping each other, our students, and faculty through volunteer work on all levels, from leading a committee to supporting teachers in the classroom. The APA also heads our annual Admiral Auction, which raised over $100,000 last year to support programs, teacher wish lists, and changes on both campuses to support hybrid learning. For example, the tents you see this year — for students to gather outdoors for classes, lunch, and other activities — are some of the many items supported by auction funds.

This fall will look a little different due to COVID-19 restrictions. We plan to host meetings and community gatherings on Zoom, and get together in person with small off-campus events if and when official guidelines allow. Join us for our first 20-21 APA meetings to get involved, meet new friends, build a strong parent network, and hear from Head of School Doug Lagarde.
  • Teel Campus: Tuesday, September 22nd
  • Chesapeake Campus: Friday, September 25th
The first 15 minutes of each meeting will be set aside for social time, encouraging casual conversations and allowing time for parents to join after dropping students at school. Check The Binnacle for Zoom links and updates. All are welcome to share ideas for the year ahead!

An APA Program Just for You

During your first year, you are included in our APA's New Parent Program to help you become familiar with Severn and get to know other families. Program highlights include:
  • Welcome to the Family: A summer call or email from a volunteer parent ambassador, welcoming you to the Severn community and offering to answer any questions.
  • Getting to Know You: A program to share fun interests, photos, and news with other new families.
  • All You Forgot to Ask: The first weeks of school can be filled with information overload. Teel Campus parents (grades 6-12), join us on September 10th at 9:00 am for a Zoom session with other parents to answer any questions you may have. Please check The Binnacle for the Zoom link.
  • Did You Know?: A monthly mailing highlighting some of the fun facts and history of Severn that even our most seasoned parents may not know!
We are working on building this program to meet your needs and welcome any questions, suggestions or ideas!
