Getting Creative With Summer at Severn

Can you think of a better way to spend the summer than painting on the banks of the Severn river? Or getting your hands dirty on the pottery wheel? This year our specialty camps for grades 5 and up included Art-Ability and Get Fired Up, two programs that bring out the artist in every camper. With individualized instruction from our expert teachers, campers expanded their imaginations while building foundational skills in art and design. From creating silk suncatchers with ink to sculpting masterpieces from clay, our Summer at Severn campers learned the basics of painting, drawing and ceramics while having a ton of fun along the way!

Art-Ability

Taught by Severn Upper School art teacher Ms. Mary Ellen Carsley, this camp is all about exploring different materials while finding inspiration from other artists and your surroundings. Our budding artists created:
  • Acrylic paintings including landscapes of Round Bay, geometric abstractions in the style of Piet Mondrian and “my favorite animal” portraits
  • Accordion comic books
  • Pastel trees and flowers in the style of Georgia O'Keeffe
  • Watercolor fish and birds
  • Calligraphy and gold gilded letters
  • Silk suncatchers painting ink on silk

Get Fired Up!

Taught by Severn Lower School art teacher Ms. Jonnie Friedman, this program takes campers through the fundamentals of ceramic composition to sculpting, glazing and firing their own creations. Ms. Friedman helps our budding artists craft their personal style as they develop technical skills. Our young potters learned:
  • Hand-building techniques like slab and coil construction
  • How to center, throw and trim clay on the wheel
  • The properties of different glazes and how glaze can enhance the final project
  • How to fire their work in the kiln

Creativity, Community and Fun

The right camp should do more than just keep your child busy during the summer. A well-rounded camp experience includes time to learn, time to be active and inventive, and time to develop friendships. Our Summer at Severn art camps are the perfect blend of creativity, community and fun. Campers spend time outside, have free time to make art on their own, and push their artistic boundaries with challenging, but rewarding projects they are proud to display in our art gallery and at home.

About Our Summer at Severn Specialty Camps

Our specialty camps are crafted around week-long themes from theater and art to chess and outdoor adventures. Whether your child is brand new to the camp experience or already knows the ropes, our camps offer great opportunities for kids to gain confidence, explore their interests and try something new. Every camp is taught by Severn School teachers with the help of our crew of junior counselors, many of whom are Severn students or alumni.
