A History of Excellence at Severn School

The Loyal Legion designed the contest nearly 60 years ago to recognize outstanding achievement in the study of United States history. For the past 15 years, it has been awarded to the top graduating AP History student at Severn School.

In 1974, Allan Westcott '76 became the first Severn student to win the competition. President Gerald R. Ford presented the award to Westcott at the Loyal Legion's annual Lincoln birthday celebration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.

Fred Hunt, who the award is named after, was a Civil War student from the Severn Class of 1930. In 1922, as a nine-year-old boy, Mr. Hunt attended the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. He was part of an audience that included Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of President Lincoln. Mr. Hunt has been a long time promoter and patron of research by Severn students. The award includes the presentation of a $500 cash prize.

”Jimmy and Aidan are truly gifted students with a sincere interest in history. Mr. Kunst, the AP European History teacher, and I were both impressed with their scholarly work. What is most impressive is how this was accomplished while being engaged in numerous school activities and advanced academic classes.”— Mr. John Bodley
