Bring Your Little Learners to Our Next Mini Makers Event!

Are you interested in learning more about our early childhood programs at Severn? Join us for our next Mini Makers event for a firsthand look at how we embrace the Maker Mindset for our littlest learners. Meet our maker gurus, prekindergarten teachers Ms. Crystal Erskine and Ms. Chrisie Saunders, take a peek at our early childhood programs, and watch your child explore and innovate — Severn School style! Mini Makers is a great introduction for children ages 2½ to 5, including preschool, prekindergarten and incoming kindergarten students.

The Maker Mindset Starts Early

If you peek inside our busy Early School classrooms, you’ll see smiles and a lot of play. But if you look closer you’ll see our teachers guiding students toward making discoveries. They ask open-ended questions and let the kids take the lead. They give our littlest learners the space to create something original, to figure things out and make their own way. This type of teaching is at the heart of the maker movement and plays a big role in our Early School.

The Maker Mindset is More Than a Program

The Maker Mindset is who we are. It’s how we learn in the Maker Lab and in our classrooms. Our students learn to come up with creative ways to solve problems throughout the day and then take these ideas home to continue their explorations. They are comfortable talking about their process while giving and receiving feedback from their teachers and peers. They surprise us with their ingenuity — viewing problems as opportunities to think outside the box and create unique solutions. The Maker Mindset prepares our students to take on any challenge and become the innovators of tomorrow.

Join the Fun

Is your child more of an artist than a tinkerer? Join us for our Mini Matisse workshop on April 4, 2019, designed to inspire creativity and a love of reading and art. Guided by librarian Ms. Pilar Okeson and art teacher Ms. Jonnie Friedman, parents and children will enjoy a story from a popular early childhood author and explore the illustrations found in the literature. Tying picture books and the visual arts together, each child will leave with his/her own masterpiece inspired by the story.
