Charlie Olmert '17 Awarded at Lincoln's Birthday Celebration

Congratulations to senior Charlie Olmert who was awarded the Frederick Drum Hunt Outstanding AP History Student Award on Sunday, February 12th. The award presentation was part of the annual ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, commemorating the anniversary of President Lincoln's birthday.
Charlie’s family and Mr. Alex Kunst, Severn’s AP European History teacher, also attended the ceremony.
The Hunt award is presented annually by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, a fraternal order founded by officers of the union army the day after the death of President Lincoln in 1865. Membership is limited to such officers and their direct male descendants.

The Loyal Legion designed the contest nearly 60 years ago to recognize outstanding achievement in the study of United States history.

In 1974, Allan Westcott '76 became the first Severn student to win the competition. President Gerald R. Ford presented the award to Westcott at the Loyal Legion's annual Lincoln birthday celebration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.

Fred Hunt, Severn School Class of 1930, was a Civil War student.  As a nine-year old boy, Mr. Hunt was in attendance at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922.  He was part of an audience that included Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Lincoln. Mr. Hunt has been a longtime promoter and patron of research by Severn students.

"Charlie is a truly gifted student with a sincere and scholarly interest in history  It has been a privilege to teach such an outstanding student," said Mr. Bodley, Charlie’s AP U.S. History teacher. Charlie plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.

The award includes the presentation of a $500 cash prize.
