Severn’s Boys Swim team brought home the B-Conference Championship for the third year in a row, capping an undefeated season (8-0) for the Admirals.
This achievement marks the fourth championship for the Admirals in the last six seasons.
Severn scored 454 points in the championship meet, cruising past the other top three finishers -- St. Mary’s (330 points) and Archbishop Curley (259 points) -- to secure the squad’s third conference title in as many years.
The squad set several new school records during the meet. Rhett Walker ’27 set new records in both the 200 yd freestyle (1:44.40) and 500 yd (4:41.89) freestyle events. And the 400 yd freestyle relay team of Cal Olenec ’26, Walker, Court Barrett ’26, and Gavin Monaldo ’28, set a new Severn record with a time of 3:21.81.
Severn’s gold-medal performance included five individual and three relay first-place finishes. Congratulations to:
Lucas Olenec ’28, Matthew Calabrese ’28, Michalski, and Cregan – 200 yd free relay (1:40.71)
Barrett – 100 yd backstroke (52.23)
Barrett, Cal Olenec, Monaldo, and Walker – 400 yd free relay (3:21.81)
In addition, Gavin Monaldo recorded a second-place finish in the 200 yd individual medley, and Reid Gonzalez ’27 notched silver in the 100 yd breaststroke. Cregan took third place in both the 200 yd IM and the 100 yd butterfly and Tyler Monaldo ’26 captured the bronze in the 500 yd free.
Severn’s roster includes 24 swimmers, and Head Coach Erin Domenech attributes their continued success in part to that depth. Another factor, according to Domenech, is their team culture. Outside of practice, they have team dinners and get involved in charitable activities. This year, that included participating in the Polar Bear Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Maryland. They raised over $2,000 for the privilege of wading into the Chesapeake Bay on a frigid afternoon.
"We've established a good culture," said Domenech. "They make the most of their limited time in the pool and they stay ready. They work as a team and have bonded as a team outside the pool. Everyone has bought in and it shows."
Christopher Kohl, US History teacher, serves as Assistant Coach for the swim team.
The Admirals are losing seniors Court Barrett, who is continuing his athletic career at Loyola University, Cal Olenec, and Tyler Monaldo, but retain a majority of their swimmers, making the outlook bright for the 2027 swim season.
