LS: Open Doors (week of 4/12-4/16)

Open Doors is a program designed to engage Lower School students in lessons, activities, and conversations that promote inclusivity. This program, taught by Ms. Renee Spears and assisted by LS Librarian Ms. Kristen Kwisnek, encourages students to reflect upon and celebrate our differences and our similarities. Students enjoy time together to openly discuss their thoughts and feelings as well as listen to the thoughts and feelings of others.

Last Stop on Market Street
In this spring's sessions, students will explore the meaning of beauty in all its forms. In a variety of creative activities using different media, students will find beauty in unexpected places.

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena, and illustrated by Christian Robinson, is a lovely, warm picture book, with strong and commendable themes of intergenerational friendship, building community, and finding beauty in unlikely places. It includes other messages as well: inequality (focusing on what you have instead of what you don’t have), the value of helping the less fortunate, and how to grow up to be a good person (as guided by your Nana).  This book also provides an unforgettable lesson in empathy and patience.
