Taylor Mali Author Series

Taylor Mali is one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement.  The Brooklyn-based writer and educator has been teaching spoken word workshops all over the world since 2000 visiting over 50 countries. February 24, Severn middle school students have the incredible opportunity to learn how to compose and perform spoken word poetry with Taylor who will visit 6, 7th and 8th grade English classes throughout the day.  Class time will involve composition, recitation, feedback and revision opportunities.  Students may even play some poetic improvisation games. Ultimately, this collaboration will culminate with a performance in the front of the entire student body.  His style is hysterically funny, often sentimental and accessible to young adolescents.  Aspiring writers in the Admirals’ Pen Literary magazine elective will be invited to have an intimate lunch with him.  This will foster the opportunity to ask questions and delve deeper into his experiences in order to learn how to be more articulate writers and presenters in our community.
