September 2021: Junior Updates

All juniors will be taking the PSAT the morning of October 13. Students should arrive at school by 7:45am with two sharpened #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils, please), their calculators, masks and full stomachs. After the PSAT, the 11th graders will be dismissed from school (approximately 12:15pm) and have the afternoon to focus on their academic responsibilities. After school activities will follow a normal schedule.  Why should your child take the PSAT if they have already taken the SAT? Juniors who score well can qualify as a National Merit Scholar.  If they intend to retake the SAT, the PSAT will be another opportunity to practice.

Don’t miss our College Night for Juniors and Parents on September 21 at 7:00 pm where we will address issues related to the college planning process and take questions from the audience. This is the official kickoff of the college counseling process. If you are unable to meet us in person, please join us on Zoom at https://severnschool.zoom.us/j/91076048894.

We anticipate more than 100 colleges will visit both in person and virtually this year. Juniors are encouraged to attend at least one college visit this year during their free period.  Also, all juniors receive two “Golden Tickets” which allow them to miss two classes to attend college visits. Juniors must ask their teacher at least one day in advance if they can attend the college visit and are responsible for making up any missed work. Registration for visits occurs in Naviance Student.

Juniors will be assigned to a college counselor in December, and family meetings will occur in January and February before Spring Break.  We look forward to meeting you all soon!
