Polish-AmericanOctober is the Polish American Heritage Month!What is the history of the Polish American Heritage Month and why is it celebrated? The Polish American Heritage Month has been celebrated annually since 1981, when it was first organized by Mr. Michael Blichasz in Philadelphia, President of the Polish American Congress Pennsylvania Eastern Division and the President of the Polish American Cultural Center. Thanks to the advocacy effort of Polish Americans, the House Joint Resolution 577 passed in 1984, declaring August the Polish American Heritage Month. President Ronald Reagan urged all Americans to join in the celebration honoring their Polish heritage in the United States. Two years later the month was changed to October. -

International Day of Non-Violence
The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. In January 2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence from a Hindi teacher in Paris teaching international students to the World Social Forum in Mumbai. -

During the Open House for preschool - grade 5, you can expect to meet our admissions team, talk with current parents, tour the school, and get a sense of daily life at the Chesapeake Campus.

The Middle School, in cooperation with Anne Arundel County School Health Services, will conduct a Vision and Hearing Screening on Friday, October 8. All 8th grade students, any students who are new to Anne Arundel County, and any other students whose parents request it (in writing, no later than October 1) will be screened. US Freshmen Homecoming Reception
Location: Creeden Front LawnAll freshmen students are invited to a reception featuring lite fare, dessert and refreshments one-half hour prior to the Homecoming Dance sponsored by the APA. In hosting the event, we hope to encourage freshmen to come to the dance as a group and thereby diminish the pressure of walking into their first high school dance alone.
Our 9th grade parent representative will be in contact with parents on volunteering for this event, which includes providing items for the reception. Parents do not attend the reception. Thank you for your support!
This event will take place on the lawn in front of Creeden; rain location is in Creeden Commons inside the building. -
US Homecoming Dance
Location: Alumni LawnAll Upper School students are invited to attend the Homecoming Dance. Tickets are sold for $10 by Prefects during Spirit Week. NOTE: The dance this year will be outside under a tent in front of the Alumni House. Unfortunately, we are unable to have guests from the outside. Due to a noise ordinance, and out of respect for our neighbors, the dance will take place from 7:00-9:00. -
Native American Day
Native American Day, observed annually on the second Monday in October, celebrates the cultures and contributions of the many Native American tribes. While it is not celebrated in all 50 states, it is recognized in both California and South Dakota and gaining popularity in the rest of the nation. -
National Coming Out Day
National Coming Out Day (NCOD) is an annual LGBT awareness day observed on October 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, and more (LGBT) people (and sometimes other groups typically grouped within the LGBT community) to "come out of the closet".[1] First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person.[2] The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.[3] -

We understand that as students blossom throughout the year, parents of students attending half-day become interested in having their children attend full-day. Enrollment options for preschool students include: 5 half days, 5 full days, 3 half days, 3 full days, with students in the 3-day program attending school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
To support our teachers and parents in increasing students’ time and experiences and to appropriately staff our classrooms, we have three effective dates for contracts to be amended during the 2021-2022 school year: October 15, February 11, and April 8.
If you wish to explore enrollment options to extend half days to full days, please contact Director of Instructional Programs Sherri Hoyt at 410-647-7701 extension 2025. After talking with Sherri Hoyt, parents will be directed to contact Cliff Clorety in our Lower School Business Office (410-647-7701 extension 2061) prior to each effective date. Mr. Clorety will provide you with the tuition increase associated with increasing your child’s time. -

White Cane Safety Day is a national observance in the United States, celebrated on October 15 of each year since 1964. The date is set aside to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane. -

Spirit Day
Spirit Day is an annual LGBTQ awareness day observed on the third Thursday in October. Started in 2010 by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan, it was initially created in response to a rash of widely publicized bullying-related suicides of gay school students in 2010, including that of Tyler Clementi. -
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to 17 October 1987. On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. These convictions are inscribed in a commemorative stone unveiled on this day. Since then, people of all backgrounds, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on October 17 th to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor. Replicas of the commemorative stone have been unveiled around the world and serve as a gathering place to celebrate the Day. One such replica is located in the garden of United Nations Headquarters and is the site of the annual commemoration organized by the United Nations Secretariat in New York. -
Women In Military Service For America Memorial Anniversary
The Women In Military Service For America Memorial, also known as Military Women's Memorial, is a memorial established by the U.S. federal government which honors women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The memorial is located at the western end of Memorial Avenue at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. The structure in which the memorial is housed was originally known as the Hemicycle, and built in 1932 to be a ceremonial entrance to the cemetery. It never served this purpose, and was in disrepair by 1986. Congress approved the memorial in 1985, and the Hemicycle approved as the site for the memorial in 1988. An open design competition was won by New York City architects Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi. Their original design was leaked to the public, and caused significant controversy. Two years of fund-raising and design revision followed. A revised preliminary design was approved in July 1992, and the final design in March 1995. Ground was broken for the memorial in June 1995, and the structure dedicated on October 18, 1997. -
Multicultural Diversity Day
Cleorah Scruggs, who began teaching social studies in Flint, Michigan, in 1970, wanted to bring a focus to diversity in her classroom, and then had the idea that every school in Michigan should have a diversity program. Her idea was approved by the Michigan Education Association (MEA), and she then took it to the National Education Association (NEA). In 1993, the Representative Assembly of the NEA adopted it nationwide, to "increase awareness of the tremendous need to celebrate our diversity collectively." With this, Multicultural Diversity Day was born. The day is observed by educators, who focus special attention on multiculturalism and diversity in their classrooms during it. -

MS Play (6th/7th Grade)
Location: Price AuditoriumJoin us for the 6th and 7th grade Fall production of 10 Ways to Survive Life in a Quarantine. This play is a hilarious throw-back to those early pandemic days when we were all struggling to find ways to keep ourselves occupied. You’ll learn handy solutions for entertaining yourself, from putting on a musical with your dog, to becoming an announcer for a made-up sport, to falling in love with an inanimate object (Hey, we promised handy solutions - we never said they wouldn't be strange!) Whether or not you're inspired to take up origami or squirrel observation, this play is sure to bring a laugh to anyone who has had to entertain themselves during a quarantine!

Middle School Innovation Day
MS Innovation Day, which lasts from 8:00a-12:00p, allows students to complete STEM challenges in Advisory and mixed-grade level teams. Over the course of the day, students will design, build, debate, discuss, and collaborate in three activities.
