Participation
We believe that fitness is essential to everyone’s well being; we also believe athletics teach important life skills that stretch beyond the body. Through our robust athletics program, our students learn hard work, personal accomplishment, good sportsmanship, self-discipline, and cooperation, from their first day through their senior year.
We Offer a Full Athletics Experience
Team sports, independent physical pursuits, traditional “PE” classes — athletics round out the college-prep experience at Severn School. We provide an extensive and competitive athletic program, and in any given year, almost 90 percent of our Upper and Middle School students play on at least one interscholastic team. School teams compete in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM).

At Severn, we believe athletics is an extension of the classroom in which young people are challenged both mentally and physically in their pursuit of personal excellence. Severn's athletic program is committed to a quality experience, highlighted by commitment, hard work, pride and teamwork. The importance of integrity, sportsmanship and personal excellence in a competitive environment are at the core of our program. -
Giving it Your All
Our athletic department works to reinforce the idea that while a good competitor always plays to win, that competitor also understands that the true measure of performance is not necessarily winning, but giving it his/her all.
Through team memberships, students learn that they have a responsibility to themselves, their teammates, and their coaches to maximize the development of many interpersonal skills such as listening, expressing one’s opinion, following directions, accepting constructive criticism, and supporting the decisions of teammates and coaches.
It is the job of the director of athletics and the coaching staff to create, sustain, and enhance the learning environment.
