The Severn Experience Starts with Hello

We live in a world of sound bites and headlines. With the amount of information at our fingertips, sometimes a cursory review is all we can manage in our busy lives. But when it comes to exploring options for your child’s education, headlines and summaries are simply not enough. At Severn, we offer an alternative to skimming through. We offer an experience for prospective families that helps you get to know us, but even more importantly, helps you reflect on how best to meet the needs of your family. In every part of our school, we believe the process—the experience—is as valuable as the end result. And your Severn experience doesn’t start on the first day of class, it starts with our first hello.

Informative By Design

Our admissions experience is designed to be as informative as possible for the applicant, their family and us. Our goal is that by the end of the process, there are no more questions. Just as you might read several articles on a topic in order to get the full picture, our process involves several ways for families to get to know Severn (and vice versa). Each piece offers a different perspective. Because every family is different, our process isn’t linear nor is it set in stone, but we encourage every family to participate in every part.

Campus Tour
This is our favorite way for families to begin the process of getting to know Severn. On both campuses, tours include a visit to every part of our school with either a member of our admissions team or a student guide. The campus tour offers a glimpse into student life at Severn along with information about our history and facilities. Be ready for an interruption or two along the way … we are like a big family, everyone wants to meet new faces!

The Online Application
Admission to Severn is selective; each year there are more qualified applicants than spaces available. Our online application is an essential step toward identifying the most capable and highly motivated students who will benefit from a Severn education and who will contribute positively to the life of the school.

Class Visit Day
After your application is submitted, it’s time to spend a day with us. For the “shadow” or class visit day, each student applicant (Grade 2 through Grade 12) is paired with a Severn student for the entire day. Visiting for the full day with a student buddy gives applicants a truer sense of what it’s like to go to school here—attend classes, eat lunch, participate in clubs and activities, and more. For younger applicants (Preschool through Grade 1) our visit is shorter and involves visiting a classroom and an overall academic assessment led by an admissions team member.

Student and Parent Interviews
We like to think of these more as discussions than interviews. For Lower School applicants, each family has one-on-one time with an admissions team member. For Middle and Upper School applicants, we meet with the student and talk separately with their family. This is the time for the applicant and their family to ask any questions of our admissions team, and for our admissions team to learn more as well. If you have questions about curriculum, athletics, arts, facilities, clubs, etc., this is the time to dive in!

The Whole Story

We want every family to understand the whole Severn story before making their choice. Part of our mission is to know and value each and every member of our community. And even if you’re only thinking about applying to Severn, we count you as part of that community. Our admissions experience is built so you get every angle on Severn and we learn more about you through each step.

Our Best Advice

Our best advice for prospective families is to look beyond the headlines of any school you consider. Dig deeper into the school culture and curriculum to find out if it’s really the best match for your child and your family. And at the end of the day, go with your instincts. Choosing a school is a very personal decision for every applicant and their family. We hope that you will join us for our full admissions experience and find the answer that is right for you.
