MS Science
The science curriculum is designed to help the Middle School student interact with science as a discipline and to experience cooperative inquiry as a method of investigation. Emphasis is placed on a “hands on” approach to develop a positive attitude toward an interest in science.

Sixth grade science focuses on the study of the Earth: the systems and processes that connect and shape our planet. Students are exposed to a variety of topics related to earth science including Earth’s structure; minerals; the rock cycle; weathering and erosion; geologic time; and Earth’s place in the universe. Throughout the year, students investigate the nature of science and develop scientific skills including data collection, graphing, and written communication.
-
Seventh grade science will explore life science. Topics include: cells, genetics, diversity of living things, and the human body. Students will engage in a variety of hands-on lab activities such as observing cells under a microscope, determining blood types, and animal dissections. Students will also practice testing their hypotheses while learning to write in a scientific manner.

Eighth grade science is divided between an introduction to general chemistry and an introduction to physics. Topics covered include the periodic table, controlling chemical reactions, kinematics, and Newton’s Laws of motion. While preparing to make the transition to Upper School science, students reinforce the laboratory skills of writing detailed procedures and carefully analyzing data to develop scientifically sound conclusions. During the eighth grade year, emphasis will be placed on problem-solving and critical thinking.
