  • Parenting in the Digital Age: Parent Forum

    Location: Price Auditorium
Parenting in the Digital Age, A Special Presentation

Parents, mark your calendars for Severn's first 2017-18 Parent Forum featuring Sameer Hinduja, PhD, a premier speaker and researcher on the topics of cyberbullying and safe social media use. The author of seven books, Dr. Hinjuda has also been featured by CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, NPR's All Things Considered, the BBC, and The New York Times. Those Severn faculty members who heard him in person during the March 2017 NAIS annual conference gave him rave reviews!

Given the tech-saturated world in which children are growing up, parents of younger children through teens will find something relevant in Dr. Hinduja's content. Those attending the October 12th forum can expect to:
    • Learn research-based parenting approaches designed to induce moral and ethical choices online (and offline)
    • Sharpen your strategies to informally and formally monitor your children's online actions
    • Realize the importance of intentionally cultivating resilience and empathy, and how to use media to do so
    • Learn ways to best inquire about and respond to children's technology use and abuse
    • Identify popular online environments among adolescents today and recognize various forms of cyberbullying
    • Learn how to report cyberbullying when you spot it, and how best to assist both aggressors and targets
    • Learn how to work with Internet Service Providers, Cell Phone Service Providers, and Content Providers
    • Discover the most promising techniques for tech use instruction, rule setting, communication, discipline, encouragement, and modeling.
The format for the evening will be conversational with ample time for Q&A. You won't want to miss this event!

In addition to his parent talk, Dr. Hinduja will work with the faculty and host assemblies with the US, MS, and older LS grades. Take advantage of this opportunity to educate yourself AND open the doors of communication at home.

While there is no charge for this event, registration is required.

    PS/PK contract extension date

We understand that as students blossom throughout the year, parents of students attending half-day become interested in having their children attend full-day. .Enrollment options for preschool students include: 5 half days, 5 full days, 3 half days, 3 full days, with students in the 3-day program attending school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

To support our teachers and parents in increasing students’ time and experiences and to appropriately staff our classrooms, we have three effective dates for contracts to be amended during the 2017-2018 school year: October 13, January 26, and March 30.

If you wish to explore enrollment options to extend half days to full days, please contact Director of Instructional Programs Sherri Hoyt at 410-647-7701 extension 2025.  After talking with Sherri Hoyt, parents will be directed to contact Cliff Clorety in our Lower School Business Office (410-647-7701 extension 2061) prior to each effective date. Mr. Clorety will provide you with the tuition increase associated with increasing your child’s time.
