Alumni Snapshots: Q&A with Kristen Bauer Zaks '93

Alumni Director Carrie Grimes '91 recently caught up with alumna Kristen Bauer Zaks '93, who is gearing up for her 25th reunion. Kristen lives in Winston-Salem, N.C. She and Admiral alumna Roni Threfall Wyss are fellow parents at an independent school in North Carolina and do volunteer work together at the Ronald McDonald House where Kristen serves as President of the Board.

What is your profession?
I worked for many years as a business consultant and senior executive with Accenture. I am currently staying at home and keeping busy with my two children. I am fortunate to volunteer with several community organizations doing pro bono consulting work and I also enjoy serving on the board for several local non profit organizations.

Where do you live now and how did you end up there?
I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with my husband Jason and two children, Lilly and Charlie. I attended Wake Forest University which is in Winston-Salem and fell in love with North Carolina, especially the mild winters and Carolina blue skies. After college, I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and lived there for several years. When Jason and I got married, we decided to settle in Winston-Salem. It is a wonderful city with a small town feel and we enjoy cheering our Deacons on at all of the Wake sporting events.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?
I enjoy using the skills that I developed while I was a business consultant to help implement change to better our community. I am currently working on several projects that will hopefully have a long term positive impact on our city.

What influence did Severn have on your career path?
I learned to work hard and that was really important when I was just starting out and working long hours and traveling all over the country.

What are your favorite things to do in your free time?
I enjoy playing competitive tennis, cooking, reading and spending time with my family and friends.

If you could give advice to the Class of 2018, what would it be?
Enjoy each day and try to learn something from every experience. Also, be confident in who you are and stand up for what you believe in.

Tell me about two things that bring you joy in your life.
Two things that bring joy in my life are relationships with my family and friends and my faith. I really enjoy my life and try to treat every day as a gift and focus on the blessings that come with each day.

What teacher(s) had the most influence on you at Severn?
I had so many wonderful teachers at Severn but the two teachers that had the most influence were Senora McLaughlin and Mr. Madden. They were always encouraging, caring and made learning fun and interesting.

What is one of your favorite Severn memories?
I have so many fond memories from my time at Severn. My senior year field hockey season is one of my favorite memories. We had a brand new coach and were all a little anxious, but our team pulled together and had an incredible season beating archrivals St. Paul’s, St. Mary’s and tying Severna Park early in the season. My other favorite Severn memory happened well after graduation. In 2005, our family dedicated the Foucault pendulum in the upper school building in my Mom’s memory. My mom was a former science teacher at Severn and a long time parent and loved everything about Severn. It was really special honoring her memory and dedicating the pendulum surrounded by our dearest friends and former faculty members. My Mom always loved the pendulum at the Smithsonian and the science behind it and it is wonderful knowing that the students at Severn can enjoy it on a daily basis.

What is the most valuable asset you believe you inherited from your Severn education?
I learned a lot about character. Severn pushed me in the classroom and on the playing fields and taught me a lot about who I was and what I wanted to be. Severn was a nurturing place where you knew everyone and people genuinely cared about each other. It was also a place where you felt challenged. I can remember many grueling runs on the bike trail as part of pre-season and late nights studying after a long bus ride home from an away game in Baltimore. All of these experiences helped me to define who I was and what I wanted to be.

Did Severn have a lasting impact on who you are today? If so, in what ways?
Yes. I often think of my time at Severn as a building block. I learned so much in the classroom, on the playing fields and in the community. Severn was such a nurturing environment but also rigorous at the same time. When I went to Wake Forest, I felt like I was well prepared both academically and socially and Severn helped set me up for a wonderful four years of college. I think the lessons I learned about working hard and perseverance both in the classroom and on the playing fields helped me develop a strong work ethic and a strong sense of character. Severn is also frequently a topic of conversation when I am with my family since my brothers, my sister-in-law and my brother-in-law all attended Severn and now my nephew and cousin’s children attend as well. It is always fun to reminisce about our time at Severn and compare stories with the younger generation. I guess we must talk about it so much that my children keep asking if they can go to Severn for high school!

What are 3 words you'd use to describe Severn School?
Nurturing, challenging, community
