Senior Davis Cawlfield Named 2022 Capital Gazette Boys Soccer Player of the Year

Senior forward Davis Cawlfield set a new single season record for the Admirals this past fall, racking up 26 goals and another 12 assists. And now he’s set another, becoming the first player under Head Coach Mike McCarthy to be named as the Capital-Gazette’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
Cawlfield was instrumental in helping the Admirals achieve a perfect 17-0 season, which culminated when they captured the program’s second-straight – and seventh overall -- B Conference championship in November. The stand-out player was a member of the Varsity squad for four years, and despite missing his sophomore season due to COVID, Cawlfield ended his Severn career with 39 goals and 14 assists. That goal count included six hat tricks in his final season.

Coach McCarthy, who has led the Varsity Boys Soccer team for the past 12 years, first took notice of Cawlfield during a Middle School Soccer game, when Cawlfield was in 8th grade. What he spotted then was a player with a knack for scoring goals, a talent that he continued to develop throughout his Varsity soccer career.  And while Cawlfield certainly possesses a natural athletic ability, McCarthy emphasized his work ethic and the attack mentality that he brought to every practice and every game, saying that he is known for his determination, hard work, athleticism and quiet leadership style.

“Although this is an incredible honor and milestone for both Davis and the program, for Davis, since day one of his freshman year It’s never been about personal accolades, the number of goals, wins, or championships,” said McCarthy. “It’s always been about his true passion and love of the game, along with his teammates, coaches, and the pride he has for our program.

“Davis is a young man with a certain kind of honest open-mindedness, a constant willingness to learn and improve, all with an incredibly positive attitude, toward everything and everyone around him,” added McCarthy. “He’s an incredible teammate, has impeccable character, discipline, and integrity, and is well respected by his peers, teachers, and coaches. During his time here at Severn, he has exemplified what it takes to be a true student athlete and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.”

Humbled by the award, Cawlfield is quick to credit his teammates with setting him up to put the ball in the back of the net, saying he feels lucky to be on the end of so many scoring drives. He also points to the players of the past, and how those accomplishments have contributed to the current team’s success.

“Winning this award was an awesome feeling, and represents the culmination of four years of hard work,” said Cawlfield. “It started with earning a spot on Varsity as a freshman and building those relationships with my teammates and with Coach McCarthy. After not getting to play during the COVID year, I had the opportunity step up as a leader in my junior year and again as a senior.

“Actually being named the Player of the Year was a pretty big surprise, because I was up against some other really great players from strong programs,” he added.

Another first he experienced in the 2022 season was playing alongside his younger brother, Will. The brothers were both starting strikers, with Davis on the left and Will on the right.

Cawlfield is a multi-sport athlete, also contributing as a midfielder on the boys lacrosse team. He also played ice hockey up until his sophomore year. The Arnold resident achieved a 4.2 GPA at Severn, and has already been accepted to the United States Naval Academy. As of now, he is waiting on other applications before he decides where he will attend college in the fall.
