Celebrating Arts Achievement

This year due to COVID restrictions, our annual Fine Arts Assembly was held both in-person for our seniors and on Zoom for all other grades with a recording shared on mySevern for families and friends. This format allowed the Class of 2021 to gather in Price Auditorium and celebrate this milestone in their four years together while also recognizing the contributions of our underclassmen artists in a way that could be shared online with loved ones. Following the event, all honorees gathered for a group photo (sporting their spirit gear!).

During the assembly, Mr. Redei recounted the ways our student artists and teachers have gone above and beyond to overcome challenges and grow in ways we couldn't have predicted.

"Our visual artists took supplies home and continued to draw and sculpt when remote. Our fall play, Gaslight, was filmed in isolation booths outside entirely on students’ phones. We could not have our Dillon Moran Musician in Residence as usual in January, so instead we used Zoom to have five different sets of musicians from as close as Baltimore to as far away as Paris. Our ensembles and choirs rehearsed much of the year outside in cold and rain. They put out videos in lieu of performances and in spite of only having a few weeks since being fully back will have outdoor concerts tonight and tomorrow night. With all the disruptions to our lives it is easy to assume that arts stopped at Severn, but, as these awards and recognitions show, we have done the exact opposite." — Mr. Redei

As our students and faculty have demonstrated this year, arts education involves much more than a focus on artistic ability. It's about creative problem solving and expression, critical thinking, celebrating multiple and diverse perspectives, and learning to communicate in a variety of ways. Thank you to every Admiral artist, and their supportive families, who have strengthened our community with their dedication, grit, and joyous creativity this year.
