Admiral Archers Aim High in Louisville

This past Mother’s Day weekend Trey Dring ’23, Will Toomey ’23, Meghan Chu ’19, Eric Wisnom ’19, Grant Shanahan ’20, Michael Hesford ’21, Taylor Boteler ’22, Lila Gibson ’22, and Tristan Collins ’22 participated in the NASP (National Archery in Schools Program) U.S. Eastern National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky with 15,000 other archers from across the country. The archery community at Severn is extremely supportive, with older and younger archers working together to improve their technique and enjoy the fellowship of the group. Congratulations to our 18-19 archery team for their achievements on the range and in the classroom!

Making History in May

Our talented group of Admiral archers competed in the NASP Bullseye and IBO/3D Challenge divisions. Severn School made Maryland NASP state history as Trey Dring ’19 took 3rd place Middle School Male in the IBO/3D Challenge by shooting a 294 out of 300, being the first middle school archer to receive an award at the national level. Trey also placed top ten in the Bullseye Middle School Male division and was named to the 2019 NASP Academic All-American team.

Will Toomey '23 placed in the top 100 of the Middle School Male division for both Bullseye and IBO/3D Challenge. Both Trey and Will have qualified to compete in the NASP Open Championship Tournament this July in Nashville, Tennessee. We commend all of our Admiral archers for their dedication to the sport and commitment to supporting fellow archers at Severn and in the greater community.

An Inclusive Program, Ten Years in the Making

Teel Campus athletic trainer and Middle School physical education teacher Mr. Dan Mahoney started teaching archery in 2008 to our Middle School students and it has since grown to be a whole-school program including the Upper School archery club and a six-week program for 5th graders on Chesapeake Campus. Our Admirals Archery team is comprised of both Middle and Upper School students who compete in over ten tournaments throughout the year including the Admiral’s Cup hosted by Severn on Teel Campus each spring.

Mr. Mahoney bases his instruction on NASP’s “Eleven Steps to Archery Success,” a program through which a student who has never held a bow can progress from novice to intermediate and even expert in a short amount of time.
“Archery provides an opportunity for every student, regardless of skill level, age, or athleticism, to participate. Through the sport, our students build internal motivation, focus, and a sense of self-esteem. And it’s a great sport to develop physical core strength and endurance too. Most of all, it helps build character and perseverance. I love watching students grow to be proud of themselves, knowing they can succeed if they put the work in.” — Mr. Mahoney
