Description: In this summer painting intensive designed specifically for Upper School students, they will experience the rich tradition of plein air painting (painting outdoors) and learn how to use oil paints to translate light and shadow. In addition to creating a painting outdoors, students will also work on a more conceptual painting where they will be asked to use an idea(s) to inform their artwork. This balance working between figurative and abstract, traditional and contemporary, will provide art students with the experience of creating in different ways as a means of finding their voice. Along the way we will look at various artists who use(d) painting as means of expressing their ideas, and talk about our ideas on art, our work, and the work of others. Students will leave with new material knowledge, a foundation of painting with oils, two paintings, and as many sketches as they can create. If a student wishes to, they may sign up for both weeks of this summer intensive to continue building their skills.
