Most, if not all, of our current camp counselors have completed the Counselor in Training (CIT) Program. Although it is not mandatory, these students completed an eight-hour training and orientation session to learn and apply MD Youth Camp Regulation Guidelines in a camp setting. In addition, these CIT's were evaluated and observed by supervisors on their performance working at camp. Many former CIT's apply for a paid Counselor position the following season, and we anticipate many will be hired.
As our camp continues to grow, and camper enrollment increases, we are hopeful that our hiring needs will expand and there may be an opportunity for added counselor positions. However, sufficient camper enrollment numbers are not available until mid to late May.
Students eligible to apply as a paid Counselor, but not having completed the CIT Program, are encouraged to fill entry level counselor positions in our Extended Care Program and when the need arises, fill in for current counselors when absent. Severn School students will be given initial consideration for future employment as Counselors and acceptance into the Counselor-in-Training Program.
Our senior counselors are those applicants who are 18 years or older who are ready for the responsibilities required of them to be leaders in our summer camp program. Senior counselors work with the Camp Instructor and the Junior Counselors to manage counselor schedules, responsibilities and to create a positive, fun and safe environment for our campers.
Senior counselors should be prepared to work from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday, for the duration of their selected camp weeks beginning with camp employee orientation on Friday, June 22.
Our junior counselors are those applicants who are age 16 by the start of camp. They work together with the senior staff to create the best summer experience possible for our campers. Junior camp counselors will work closely with our campers in all activities to ensure a positive experience is had by all.
Junior counselors should be prepared to work from 8:30 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday, for the duration of their selected camp weeks beginning with orientation on Friday, June 22.
Extended Care Counselors
Extended care counselors are those applicants who qualify for either a senior or junior counselor position and will maintain similar responsibilities, however, the hours may vary with available positions in the morning from 7:30 am until 9 am or in the afternoon from 3 pm until 6 pm.
CITs are students who are 15 by the start of camp. Volunteering as a CIT is a valuable learning experience and provides you with the necessary tools to become an effective counselor. CITs assist the senior and junior counselors throughout the day and will work closely with our campers.
CITs may sign up to volunteer for one or more of our six weeks of camp and will work the same hours as our junior counselors. When you apply, please indicate which weeks you are interested in working.
