Severn School to Host Julie Lythcott-Haims Author and Educator
Severn School is proud to announce the 2019 David Astle Memorial Lecture Series speaker, Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of New York Times bestseller How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. She is also known for writing Real American, a critically acclaimed memoir detailing her personal battle with low self-esteem that American racism inflicts on people of color. On Tuesday, April 9th Lythcott-Haims will deliver a keynote address to the Upper School discussing Real American. Her visit will culminate in the evening with her “How to Raise an Adult” keynote address for the Severn community and invited guests.
For a decade she served as Stanford University’s dean of freshmen where she was known for her fierce advocacy for young adults. From her own life trajectory and from working with tens of thousands of our nation's best and brightest young adults, Julie has a clear sense of how we become the humans we want to be, and of what gets in our way. Lythcott-Haims is deeply interested in what prevents people from living meaningful, fulfilling lives.
During the afternoon session with students, she will open hearts and inspire action with her keynote speech exploring race, identity, and the issues we face in our country today followed by Q&A.
How to Raise an Adult has been published in over two dozen countries and gave rise to a TED Talk that became one of the top TED Talks of 2016 with over three million views, and counting, as well as a sequel which will be out in 2020. In her evening session with parents, Lythcott-Haims will inspire the audience to examine their behaviors and join the growing movement to allow children to develop the resourcefulness, resilience, and inner determination necessary for success.

About the Astle Memorial Lecture Series
David Sheridan Astle '92 is the late son of the Honorable and Mrs. John C. Astle, Maryland State Senator (District 30). The 23-year-old died tragically in December 1997, when a deer stepped into the path of a car he was riding in.A 1992 Severn School alumnus, David was an active member of the school community during his seven years as a student, and a well-liked member of the alumni body. He told his mother shortly before his death that he felt he had developed life-long friends while at Severn School. He realized Severn taught him more than the basics of education; Severn School helped develop his character by encouraging his own innate sense of integrity, responsibility, honor, and commitment.
The David Astle Memorial Endowment, begun by Senator and Mrs. Astle in 1998, funds this annual lecture series through which knowledgeable and/or inspirational speakers are invited to share their expertise, experiences and messages with the community.
