Severn 4th & 5th Graders Compete in Spelling Bee

Similar to the Middle School spelling bee, students who correctly spelled their word moved on to the next round, while students who spelled their word incorrectly did not move forward. In the final round, if a finalist spells a word incorrectly, the other finalist must spell their next word correctly. If they fail to spell that word correctly, another final round begins.

 

The 4^th grade bee quickly became very exciting, lasting 11 rounds and 75 minutes, with several difficult words spelled correctly. Finally, Waters K. spelled ‘broached’ correctly to secure the win over classmates Mikey M. and Lily C, who finished as runner-up and in 3^rd place respectively.

 

The 5^th grade bee went for 15 rounds and lasted around an hour. After many close rounds, Aaron N. spelled ‘acrid’ correctly to win the bee, with Elijah L. coming in as the runner-up and Lily T. and Sasha Q. tying for 3^rd place. Most importantly, all students were supportive of each other, regardless of whether a word was spelled correctly or not. Congratulations to all students who participated in the Spelling Bee.

 

For those interested,  The 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place the week of Memorial Day 2023 at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, and is usually broadcast on national television.
