Team Reichwein Wins Hoops Madness, a Spirited Upper School Tradition

Team Reichwein took 1st place in the Upper School’s annual Hoops Madness basketball tournament.
This evening event is a long-standing tradition and a favorite amongst Severn students, drawing a large crowd again this year. Green Up, Guard Up took 2nd place overall. Click here to watch video highlights from Hoops Madness.

As the competition progressed and the field was narrowed, the teams that earned a spot in the final 8 were:
  • Disciples of Glasby
  • Mr. Starr Wars
  • Indigo Ballers
  • Green Up, Guard Up
  • Team Pillows
  • GymSharks
  • Scrub Rockets
  • Team Reichwein
Team Reichwein – comprised of mostly 9th graders – was undeniably the event’s Cinderella Story. The team was coached by Matthew Reichwein, Upper School Spanish teacher and captained by Ben Kennedy ’25. They were the last ones to register, had a difficult time recruiting a 7th player, and upon arrival, didn’t yet have a team name picked out - they chose their coach’s last name at the last minute. But when it came down to the final buzzer, they came out on top, winning the entire event.

In addition to the overall winner, awards are also given out for the most spirited, the best costume, free-throw and 3-point shooters and more.  Severn parents serve as volunteer referees during the fun and competitive event.

Other award winners were:
  • Best Costume: Beckett’s Bunch
  • Most Spirited: Green Up, Guard Up
  • Girls Three Point Winner: Madison Tyron
  • Boys Three Point Winner: Jacob Todd
  • Girls Free Throw Winner: Peach Wellschlager
  • Boys Free Throw Winner: Jamison Wildt
