Outlook is Bright as Admirals Prepare for Spring Sports Season

The spring sports season is officially underway, so we asked the Head Coach from each of our 7 varsity programs to provide a preview of the outlook for their squad. Here’s what they shared with us:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse (2022 Record: 7-8)

Head Coach: Kathy Rudkin

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

This season's team is one I am super excited about. This senior class (9 total) is near and dear to my heart as they're the first class I have known since they were freshmen! It has been a joy watching them grow into the leaders they are now. We return 12 players who received significant minutes for us on the varsity team last year so I am excited that our team will be the most experienced one I have coached thus far. I am also very excited about our young players who are coming in with tons of potential.

Players to Watch:

Senior Cameron Christie - Returning varsity goalie who led us to some huge wins last season (perhaps the most exciting being her game winning save against St. Mary's). She is headed to play at Duke in the Fall.

Senior Zoee Stencil - Zoee is a do-it-all player for us. She led the team in caused turnovers and groundballs (top 3 in every other category as well) last season and is a huge impact player on both ends. She will be continuing her career at Virginia Tech next season.

Senior Erin Hooper is another great leader for us on the field. She is a smart player who never takes a play off, she will be playing at Notre Dame in the Fall.

Senior Kacey Hopkins is our defensive voice on the field and an incredibly strong 1v1 crease defender. She will be continuing her career at Akron in the Fall.

Seniors Emma Ripley and Sage Whiteside are both players who are expected to be big impact players for us this season as well! Emma will be continuing her career at RIT and Sage is headed to play at Dickinson.

Some of my young returners I expect big things from include Issy Leech, Bronwyn Bolton, Giselle Torain, Dylan Ulehla, and Sally Reed.

Final Thoughts:

We had huge IAAM A conference wins over St. Mary's, John Carroll, Mount de Sales, Roland Park, Garrison Forest, and Gerstell last season along with some very close losses we aim to avenge this season. We did well enough in conference to earn ourselves a first round home game in the playoffs.

Varsity Baseball (2022 Record: 6-13 (6-10 in Conference; MIAA B conference))

Head Coach: Zak Starr

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

This year's team is young and looking to compete for a playoff spot. We are a very young team but our young players are very committed to baseball. About half of our lineup is returning, and all of our starters will be underclassmen. With a new coach and talented underclassmen, we are looking to build on the legacy of last year's seniors and establish a culture.

Players to Watch:

Ben Campion, Jr - P/OF. A returning top of the lineup hitter, and Ben will be one of our top pitchers.
Caden Blanck, So - P/OF/1B. Our leader in innings pitched last year, Caden is developing into one of the top pitchers in our conference. He is also one of our best hitters and a good fielder in multiple positions.
Sean Ward, Jr - IF. 2-year returning starter, will be a leader and key contributor offensively and defensively.
Fletcher Warner, Fr - CF/P. A freshman who is ready to contribute as a fielder, hitter, and pitcher.

Varsity Boys Tennis (2022 Record: 5-1; fell in championship to Gilman)

Head Coach: Bill Gilroy

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

After two extremely successful years as one of the top tennis teams in the MIAA A Conference, we will enter the 2023 season with a revamped line-up. With two of our top players from the past two years now playing in college, we have only three returning lettermen to lead us into the 2023 season. Two of those three have received All-Conference and All-County recognition, so we will be looking to them to lead us this year. They both lead by example, so if their teammates follow their lead, we are capable of being competitive once again.

Players to Watch:

Aiden Gilroy is the only senior on this year's team and has been recognized as an All-Conference and All-County player. He has been on the varsity since his freshman year, and will serve as a Co-Captain in 2023. Formerly playing at #1 doubles, he is projected to transition this year to the #2 singles spot. Daniel McNair is a junior in his third year on the varsity. He, too, is an All-Conference and All-County player with a lot of experience, and a desire to get better every time he steps on a court. He will play #1 singles this year.

Alumni Success Story:

Last year, Matthew McNair was named the County Player of the Year for the second straight season. He was also recognized in 2021 by USA Today as the High School Player of the Year in Maryland. Matthew is now in his first year (Plebe Year) at the U.S. Naval Academy, and is a member of Navy's Tennis Team.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse (2022 Record: 10-8)

Head Coach: Joe Christie

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

With 16 seniors on the roster, Severn returns key players at every position on the field. In addition to the added depth and experience comes a senior class with vast leadership capacity who have been dedicated to off-season work since the start of the fall semester.

Players to Watch:

Jacob Todd - 2023 Attackman (Princeton) - MIAA All Conference Team, All County, 2nd Team All Metro
Reid Gills - 2024 Face off Midfielder (Penn State) - MIAA All Conference Team, All County, 2nd Team All Metro
Will Perez - 2023 Goal keeper (Navy) - 2nd Team All County

2022 Team Highlights:
The Admirals are building off of a strong 2022 season that included breaking into the top 25 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School rankings, and finishing the season ranked 12^th in the state, according to Inside Lacrosse. Other highlights from that run include:

Finishing with a 10-8 overall record, a 5-5 record in MIAA A Conference play, and earning a spot in the play-offs for the 2nd year in a row.
Defeating teams from four different conferences and three different states
They defeated the 3x and reigning 5A Virginia state champion Riverside Rams in an early season match up
They gutted out a 10-9 win over InterAc powerhouse Penn Charter in the second game of a back to back on our spring break trip to Philadelphia
They swept the annual Public/Private Challenge and earned bragging rights in the county by breaking Severna Park’s 2 year/29 game win streak as well as defeating Broadneck HS
The defeated St Paul’s for the 3rd time in 16 years in a come from behind road win in the MIAA game of the week
They drained the lake by defeating Boys Latin on the road -- ranked 5th in the nation at the time -- for the 2nd time in 25 years
They defeated Gilman for the 4th time in 31 years

Varsity Track & Field (2022 Season: Boys placed 3^rd in Championships)

Head Coach: Andrew Otero

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

The T&F team will be well rounded this year with a nice combination of returning student-athletes and many younger new student-athletes. Our roster has increased by 15-20 members, making for a great season. With our main track for practice being renovated at Bates Athletic Complex, we will need to find solutions to persevere throughout the season.

Athletes to Watch:

Emma Patrick - she is a freshman on the team who performed exceptionally well in Middle School; nearing school record times in the 800m and 1600m.
Louis Lentz and Garrett Jay- As returning seniors, these two have made TREMENDOUS growth since freshmen year. They will be key athletes in the 800m, 1600m, 4x400m, 4x800m, and/or 3200m
Anna Clark - A returning sophomore who has progressed wonderfully in the jumping events. She will be a person to watch in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and High Jump.
Parker Collins - A returning junior who has flourished in the hurdling events placing top three in the conference in previous years.
Trent Griger - A returning junior with exceptional speed and heart in the 400m and 4x400m.

Golf (2022 Record: 11-2)
Head Coach: Matthew Reichwein

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

We have a talented group returning who looks to defend their MIAA B Conf Championship. They have won 3 in a row.

Players to Watch:

Casey O'Donnell - SR

Final Thoughts:

We return 4 of the top 6 players from last season. We have several returning players who can jump in the lineup and make an impact right away.

Sailing
Head Coach: Tom Sitzmann

Outlook for the 2023 Season:

We have a talented team that is returning most players from last year's group that finished 2nd at the Mallory HS Fleet Race National Championship, and 3rd at the Baker Team Race National Championship.

Players to Watch:

We are led by 5 talented seniors. Robby Meek is a two-time HS Singlehanded National Champion. Thomas Sitzmann is an International 420 World Champion, and together these two have skippered our team to podium finishes in 4 national championship events, and they have also won 2 Atlantic Coast Championships in a row.

Senior Leaders include: Robby Meek, Lilly Baker, Thomas Sitzmann, Kyle Reinecke, Jed Lory

2022 Achievements:

In 2022, we won every regatta we entered in the Maryland Interscholastic Sailing Association, and we've won our 4 District Championships for 2 years in a row.

Catch the Admirals in Action

In addition to the 7 Varsity teams, Severn’s JV and Middle School teams will be also competing this season. The first official contests of the season take place starting the week of February 27.
