Severn A Cappella Group Breakwater Takes First Place at Sing Strong Competition

Breakwater, Severn School’s A Cappella group, took first place this past weekend at the Sing Strong International A Cappella Festival, held at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
High school groups wishing to compete had to send in videos of them singing, and then be accepted into the competition. Breakwater submitted a video of them performing from the Severn Revels Concert, held in December at Severn.

In addition to taking first place in the group competition, Severn senior Sophia Amplo ’23 was honored as Best Soloist in the competition. Sophia is a familiar face on the Severn arts and music scene, from her vocal performances with Breakwater to starring in several theater productions, including the title role in Anastasia last year and Audrey in the upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors.

When they were not performing over the weekend, students were able to attend classes and be coached by professional groups, such as Boston-based group Ball in the House, and the famous barbershop quartet Midtown. Severn students agreed that learning from Midtown was a highlight of the weekend, in addition to taking first place.
