Junior Classical League Brings Family Feud to Severn

For the past several years, our Upper School chapter of the Junior Classical League (JCL) has hosted an array of events including toga parties, Saturnalia celebrations, and certamina (quiz-bowl-style contests) to celebrate and expand their knowledge of Latin and Roman history, mythology, and culture. This year, the club brought some light-hearted fun to Price Auditorium, following guidelines for COVID safety, for one Friday night of game-show-inspired shenanigans with a Classical twist.

And the Survey Says . . .

In the popular game show, teams compete to guess the most popular answer to trivia questions as compared to previously collected survey data. To create a genuine Family Feud experience with robust data, our JCL crew needed a larger sample than the Severn community could provide. They created a list of survey questions and in a light bulb moment, asked faculty advisor Ms. Elisabeth Campbell to share the survey with her network of Latin teachers on Facebook, many of whom teach in schools that have been fully remote for the past year. They got overwhelming participation from classes all over the U.S. and enough responses to create an accurate representation of popular answers.

Armed with the input of Latin scholars far and wide, Daniel Babalola '21 and Julia Youssef '21 created the interactive game using a PowerPoint template. After testing the game in Ms. Campbell's room with a discussion about how to score, which sound effects to use, and whether or not they should wear costumes, they were ready to play the feud!
"In the lead-up, I was really impressed how the students came up with the questions. Students from across the country were really excited about it. I think for a lot of them, who haven’t been in a Latin classroom in a year, it was a lot of fun." — Ms. Campbell

About Upper School Clubs

Through our Upper School club program, we encourage students to develop their passions and explore their identities through unique opportunities for intellectual and social growth. Students can practice leadership skills, make friends outside of their typical peer groups, and dive into their interests in an informal, but structured environment with the support of faculty advisors. JCL is one of over forty student-led clubs available for our students.
