Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

Each semester, our Lower School student council takes on a service-learning project to support our global or local communities. Part of our leadership program for second through fifth graders, it’s a chance for young students to develop advocacy and organization skills — thinking outside of themselves to make positive change. Most recently, the council wrote thank you notes to Severn parents and alumni who work in healthcare and are dealing with the stress and challenges presented by COVID-19.

Kindness and Caring

Past student council initiatives involved poster campaigns, item donations, and fundraising events like lemonade stands to give back to organizations including the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Puerto Rico Strong, BARCS, and more. To make the best of their time and resources at home during remote learning, the council shifted gears to focus on gifts of kindness and caring.

Each student council member wrote and decorated several cards in hopes of bringing joy to the medical professionals who are risking their lives to keep everyone safe and healthy. With the help of their parents and student council advisors Ms. Ellis, Ms. Schubert and Ms. Mitchell, the kids mailed the cards in late April.

Keeping It Going

During this difficult time, we are proud that our students are rethinking how to fulfill their commitment to service and helping others. In addition to these thank you cards, the council is planning an initiative to write gratitude messages in chalk for postal workers and other delivery service employees.
