Alumni Snapshots: Q&A with Jessica Wilson Jones '07

Jessica Wilson Jones ’07 and Alumni Director Carrie MacVean Grimes '91 recently caught up over coffee in St. Michael’s, Maryland, where she manages her own floral business, Les Fleurs by Jes Wilson, and works in sales and marketing for Perry Cabin Resorts. Jessica is married to Severn alumnus Darnell Jones ’03.
What are some highlights of your life since graduating from Severn? I took on the role of parenting my sisters, Imani (22) and Poetry (11), after my parents passed away when I was 22-years old. Becoming a parent at a young age has made me 100% a better person. It made me deeply value life and relationships and to be grateful for everything. My education at Severn prepared me to take on the challenges of parenting and running a business. Severn taught me how to write and present myself. Severn also taught me personal skills I needed to navigate that difficult time in my life. Severn has played a huge role in who I am. I launched my floral business in 2015, after experimenting with Valentine’s arrangements by working part-time at a local florist. A photographer reached out to me to do a wedding style shoot, I made a bunch of bouquets, and before you knew it I started booking clients left and right!

Although I’ve known him for over 20 years, Darnell Jones ’03 and I reconnected in 2012, and were married last August on my parents’ anniversary in Jamaica. Darnell is the most kindhearted, thoughtful person I know. He always goes the extra mile. He anticipates others’ needs before they do. He’s gentle, funny, and can make anybody laugh!

What has surprised you about your path? My ability to overcome failure has been a big surprise — especially being a small business owner. Failures are inevitable. We’re always taught not to fail, but when you go through your own failures, you realize how important they are in your development as a person. The lessons learned are unmatched.

Who is your inspiration? My little sister Imani. She has a developmental learning disability. She’s the kind of person who is so carefree, and always grateful for all she has. She always tries--that inspires me. She never gives up on herself. She is the strongest person I’ve ever met.

What is your why? What motivates you and gives you a compass in life? My why is “joy.” I’ve been through a lot of pain with the loss of my parents. No matter what happens in life, we must find reasons to stay hopeful and motivated. No one can take away your joy.

Who had a strong influence on you at Severn? So many adults supported me — Dr. Baugh, Mrs. Duncan, Mr. Zmuda to name a few. They were always encouraging, patient, and their support gave me confidence. One of my biggest influences during my time at Severn was my basketball coach, Arlene Duckett Helm. When I first came to Severn, I struggled. Arlene tutored me every day. She was special because never gave up on me—she pushed me to my limits. She got me through my freshman year.

Do you have any advice for the Class of 2020? Take it all in. I graduated 12 years ago and some of the memories have faded. Cherish each moment for what it is. Don’t be afraid of the future! As long as you are living your life, that is success. Success is truly defined by your happiness.
