The Class of 2019 Leaves Their Mark

The class of 2019 exudes an energy of camaraderie and purpose that has developed throughout their years together. Spend just a few moments with any member of this class and you'll feel it — their sense of passion and community is tangible. And every member of this class has made an indelible mark on our school. Over the past few weeks, our seniors shared happy tears, wistful smiles, and joyful memories as they prepared to begin a new chapter in their lives. Enjoy this recap of their last days at Severn and join us in wishing a fond farewell to the class of 2019!

Honoring Admiral Athletes

We are grateful to all members of the class of 2019 for their contributions to Severn’s athletic programs over the past four years. Many of our graduating seniors were honored at the spring athletics awards assembly while parents and peers cheered them on.

And good luck to all of our Admirals who are going on to play in college!

Exploring the Possibilities of Tomorrow

After spending three weeks off campus working on their independent projects, seniors returned for their final day at Severn to present their work to teachers and peers. From shadowing cardiothoracic surgeons to training animals and learning the ropes of finance and law, these projects are a reflection of the many paths the class of 2019 might explore in college and beyond. Many paired with Severn Alumni mentors to complete their projects and we are grateful to every Admiral alum who shared their time and expertise to enrich the lives of our students.

Recognizing Academic Excellence

The class of 2019 gathered with the entire Upper School one last time to honor the outstanding academic achievements of our student body at the academic awards assembly. This marks the end of their academic years at Severn, but the beginning of a lifetime of success beyond Water Street.

Honoring the Bonds of Friends and Mentors

Part of what makes Severn so special are the close relationships our students form not only with their peers but with our faculty and staff. In this annual tradition, seniors walked through a "hug line" to share a few special moments with the friends and teachers they have grown so close with over the years.

Learning that Transcends

Each year, a select group of seniors transcends our academic curriculum to develop a year-long intellectual pursuit that reflects their growing passions through the Van Eney ‘09 Fellows program. The class of 2019 had the largest group of fellows yet. Each presented their work at events throughout the week and at a formal, culminating ceremony. From research on music therapy and dementia to writing and recording a full album, their projects impressed the audience of families, teachers and peers.

Always an Admiral

The senior class gathered for the alumni induction dinner to officially join the ranks of Admiral alumni — a network of support that they will carry throughout their lives. Director of Development Shannon Howell presented them with a brick for the Alumni Walkway to recognize their historic class gift to the Severn Annual Fund. They were the first class in Severn School history to get 100% participation in giving to the fund. As teacher Ms. Susan Jackson said, “This class is very special in many ways! Their generosity is just one.”

A Night of Songs and Stories

Held the night before graduation, baccalaureate is an intimate celebration of our students’ talents and achievements. The evening was filled with emotion, nostalgia and the unmistakable sense of connection shared by every Severn Admiral. Family, faculty and peers looked on as each senior was honored with touching anecdotes accompanied by outstanding musical performances that left the crowd breathless.

Strong Roots and Unlimited Promise

During her closing speech at commencement, Senior Class President Maggie Sullivan ‘19 said to the 105th graduating class, “We all started Severn as just little saplings. However, every one of us has grown immensely over the years. And now with the rest of our lives before us, I am confident that each of us will grow to be big, strong trees that will make the world just a little bit more beautiful. But never forget that the roots of your character, conduct and scholarship are right here in the soil on Severn’s campus.”

You made your mark on Severn School — we can't wait to see what you'll do out in the world. Congratulations to the class of 2019!
