Three Severn Juniors Recognized for Outstanding Achievement

Each year The Capital Gazette, Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, and other local groups elect students to receive the Outstanding Student Achievement Award. This year, three Severn juniors were honored at the award ceremony on March 13th, 2019 along with other outstanding students from the Anne Arundel County community. Join us in congratulating Danica Williams '20, Samuel Bruce '20, and Lindsay King '20 for their remarkable academic achievement, success in the visual or performing arts, and/or exceptional citizenship in our school and the surrounding community. Danica Williams

Danica Williams is a scholar in the truest sense of the word: She genuinely loves to learn for the sake of learning.

Danica’s teachers say they count on her to advance the conversation to a higher level with her mature and thoughtful contributions.

Danica is an aspiring engineer who is so enthralled by the various engineering options she discovered at the Naval Academy’s Summer STEM program that she can’t choose just one. She also has a great love for the humanities, specifically history and languages.

In global studies, Danica delighted in learning about industrialization and being introduced to South American and Chinese history for the first time. Danica’s history teacher noted that she is deliberate, careful and meticulous in her approach to texts, making her a very strong analytical writer. This deliberate approach serves Danica well in her study of Latin. She is capable of translating elaborate passages with ease!

A member of the Junior Classical League, Danica has participated in multiple Certamen, a game of fast recall of facts about classical civilizations and their people, languages, and cultures.

Outside of academic endeavors, Danica contributes her prowess to Severn’s varsity tennis team and her time to Severn’s Multicultural Alliance, which sponsors diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the school year. A natural scholar and an involved community member, Danica will inevitably make Severn proud in all her future endeavors.

Samuel Bruce

Samuel Bruce regularly expands the perception of what is possible at Severn School.

As a preeminent scholar and athlete, he has achieved at the highest levels at Severn and beyond. Sam is already stretching our curriculum as a junior, and his senior program will likely be supplemented with a year-long Independent Fellows project in computer science.

Truth be told, he would probably pursue that investigation whether the school had a Fellows program or not because he is spurred by the prospect of discovery.

Sam has discovered a lot about himself on our wrestling team, but it is on the water that he truly excels. A skipper who sails year-round, he helped lead Severn to sixth place at Team Race Nationals last year. Whether he is on the water or in the lab, Sam lives for the moments when concepts fall into place.

He has proven that those moments can abound when one shapes the concept and defines the question.

Lindsay King

Lindsay King makes Severn School and the world around her a better place. A stellar student pursuing an extremely rigorous curriculum, Lindsay is driven to satisfy her deep curiosity on a daily basis.

Once she masters a concept, she gladly shares her knowledge with classmates, helping them to succeed as well. Lindsay leads by example in the classroom and in her elected role as student council vice president.

She listens, encourages, and helps her peers determine what actions to take to accomplish their goals — whether planning Spirit Week or making a crucial decision about student discipline during an Honor Court proceeding.

To develop her leadership skills, Lindsay attends numerous conferences and shares her learning with the community; for example, Lindsay facilitated a discussion on the wage gap during Severn’s Unity Day. Beyond her leadership prowess, Lindsay is known for her humanitarian heart.

She has raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer awareness, a cause very close to her heart. With aspirations to become a doctor, Lindsay’s dream is to ultimately practice medicine in an underdeveloped country.

In her “spare” time, Lindsay has competed on both the junior varsity field hockey and the varsity swim teams for the last three years.

Additionally, as a founding member of Severn’s Historical Society, Lindsay helps edit and publish an annual journal of historical-themed essays. Severn School teachers and counselors said they will miss her dearly when she graduates!
