  • Heritages Awareness Month

    Native American
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.  The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

    All Because You Matter
    by Tami Charles

In this class we will explore and acknowledge that all children, especially those from marginalized backgrounds, no matter where they come from, they matter. That the people that came before them, and the work they did to secure the life we have today, matter. Because of this our children must continue that same work and carry themselves with pride, even when they experience some moments where they are made to feel unimportant.

    Preschool-2nd grade students:
    You Matter
    by Christian Robinson

In this class we will discuss that no matter your size, your interests, or where you live, we will explore and acknowledge
that we are all important and deserve to be loved and heard. What makes you feel like you matter? How do we show others that they matter? This is a great story with an incredible message!

  • Diwali (11/2 - 11/6)

The Diwali festival actually runs for five days, with the main event happening on the third day in most places in India. It's associated with Lord Ram's return to his kingdom in Ayodhya after exile and rescuing his wife from demon king Ravan on Dussehra. However, in South India, the festival is observed as the defeat of Narakasura. It's a one-day celebration, known as Deepavali, that usually falls a day before the main Diwali date but sometimes occurs on the same day (when the lunar days overlap). The festival isn't celebrated in Kerala though. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune and prosperity, is the primary deity worshiped during Diwali. Each day has a special significance as follows.
    • In 2021, Diwali is on November 4.
    • In 2022, Diwali is on October 24.
    • In 2023, Diwali is on November 12.

Each of the heirs to the tyrannical billionaire Simon Starkweather has the means and the motive to do away with him.  Starkweather gathers his family and employees to announce the contents of his will.  His lawyer, Lois van Zandt, reveals that he has bequeathed vast fortunes to his befuddled niece Fiona, her playboy son Jordan, his great-niece Paula (a Southern belle) and his grandson Simon III, as well as to his many servants.  Then Lois delivers the bombshell!  Within hours this will becomes invalid.  Of course, the rejected heirs are not pleased, so it’s not surprising when they roam the old mansion carrying such items as an ax, a gun and poison.  Predictably, the lights go out, and Simon is discovered murdered.  Simon III is determined to find his grandfather’s killer, with the help of Detective Davis. The play’s unique ending, utilizing secret ballots gathered at intermission from the audience, determines the killer in this maze of murder.

Hanukkah (/ˈhɑːnəkə/; Hebrew: חֲנֻכָּה‎, Modern: Ḥanukkáh, Tiberian: Ḥanukkāh; usually spelled חֲנוּכָּה‎, pronounced [χanuˈka] in Modern Hebrew, [ˈχanukə] or [ˈχanikə] in Yiddish; a transliteration also romanized as Chanukah, Ḥanukah, Chanuka, Hanuka) is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. It is also known as the Festival of Lights (Hebrew: חַג הַאוּרִים‎, ḥag ha'urim).

Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah (or hanukkiah). One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shamash (Hebrew: שַׁמָּשׁ‎, "attendant"). Each night, one additional candle is lit by the shamash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival. Other Hanukkah festivities include singing Hanukkah songs, playing the game of dreidel and eating oil-based foods, such as latkes and sufganiyot, and dairy foods. Since the 1970s, the worldwide Chabad Hasidic movement has initiated public menorah lightings in open public places in many countries.
