Volume: 13-14  Issue: #3 9-3-2013 Tuesday, September 03, 2013
Severn's 100th year officially kicked off Friday starting with Convocation in the Edward St. John Athletic Center. Following a warm welcome from Headmaster Lagarde, US Student Council President Rachel Corn '14, MS Student Council President Noah Jaccard '18, and Lower School representative Collyn Ballentine '21, each offered words of advice, encouragement, and welcome. The more than 800 kindergarten though senior students and faculty then donned Centennial t-shirts Friday for a commemorative photo on the girls' turf field. The Severn Admirals were photographed with a high resolution camera mounted on an unmanned drone.

Please, Put Down Your Phone

Observe the morning or afternoon drop-off process for a few minutes and you'll be amazed at the number of drivers talking/texting on their cell phones. The National Safety Council estimates at least 28% of all traffic crashes – or at least 1.6 million crashes each year – involve drivers using cell phones and texting. Please, for the safety of our community, SLOW DOWN and refrain from cell phone use while driving on campus.

SP Campus Traffic Procedures

US & MS parents: are you getting dirty looks at drop-off and pick-up? Not certain whether 2 lanes of traffic are allowed or not? Just when is Water Street one-way? Here's the real scoop on traffic flow at Severn School:
  • Water Street is one-way traffic (west to east) from Maple Avenue to Holly Avenue from 7 - 8:30 a.m. and again from 2:30 - 4:00 p.m. Please enter campus at the Maple Avenue entrance for all pickups, including those after athletic events.
  • Please do not block Maple Avenue by creating two lanes turning into Water Street as you drop-off or pick-up your passenger(s). Safety, patience, and courtesy are required as one maneuvers around our crowded campus roadways.
  • Please note the new morning drop-off stop sign in front of the sidewalk entrance to Creeden Hall, instituted this year to protect our students as they exit cars to make their way into Creeden.
  • Maple Avenue is two-way at ALL times. Please use all available Severn parking spaces. DO NOT block anyone’s drive or vehicle or, of course, emergency lanes and entrances. NO double-parking, especially on Maple Avenue. Please refrain from parking in front of Severn’s sign at the corner of Maple and Evergreen.

23rd Annual Admiral's Cup Golf Outing: 10/22

Yes, you read that right - the annual golf outing is in October this year so mark your calendar now! Gather your foursome, as registration will soon be open.  The Tuesday, October 22 event will be held at the gorgeous Queenstown Harbor Links.
Always a sell-out, this popular event is open to everyone - parents, faculty, alums, and friends.

Call for Submissions

Once again it is time for the annual Back to School Art Show! Don't miss this opportunity to share your creativity with the entire Severn Community. All students, Lower, Middle and Upper School as well as all faculty and staff are encouraged to share the beautiful and wonderful things they have created this summer. Drawings, paintings, photography, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, models, wood crafts...any media or work is welcome! Works will be on display in McCleary Gallery through September.
Submissions for the show can be delivered to the Upper School Drawing and Painting Studio (Mrs. Carsley) at your convenience. Please submit all works by Wednesday, September 4. Don't forget to label your work with your name! Please contact Mary Ellen Carsley for questions or to arrange a pick up time and place for your work.

2013-2014 Community Directory & Online Handbook

You should have received this year's Directory. They were distributed to all students on the first day of school (2 per household). Be sure to check your student's backpack/trunk/athletic bag for yours!
This year's Community Directory is a bit different. It still contains a photo for each and every student, faculty, staff, and trustee member, as well as family addresses, class lists, and some general school information. The detailed policy and procedural information for each division (Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School) have moved to the Parent Portal
Please take time to either familiarize or reacquaint yourself and your child(ren) with the rules and expectations detailed in the Handbooks. It is important that Severn School and its parent body work together as partners and are clear about the School's purposes and practices. This partnership will offer your children the support, clarity, and consistency needed to have them develop the skills, habits, and attitudes to meet life successfully.

Directory Corrections

If you have updates to your family’s mailing address, phone numbers, or e-mail addresses, be sure to let the School know by sending an e-mail to datachange@severnschool.com. Please submit all requests for changes in writing via e-mail and specify which phone number or e-mail you are updating (ex. mother’s e-mail, father’s cell). We ask that you also include your name and your student’s name/class year to ensure that the correct record is updated! By sending changes to this centralized e-mail address, all departments in the school who need this information will be notified – including those who update the blast system, emergency forms, and databases! Thank you for helping us to keep you up-to-date on the latest School communications.
