76 Inducted into NHS & Cum Laude Society

KK
Eight members of the Class of 2016 were inducted into the prestigious Cum Laude Society during a special assembly on Tuesday, September 29.

Founded in 1906 and modeled on Phi Beta Kappa, the Cum Laude Society recognizes academic achievement in secondary schools for the purpose of promoting excellence (Areté), justice (Diké) and honor (Timé). Only 18 schools in Maryland and 370 in the United States have been granted charters. Severn School received its charter in 1986.

During the same assembly, 68 juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society. Rachel Sindler ’17 spoke on Service, Kevin Sheehan ’16 talked about Leadership, Devin Munroe ’16 shared her thoughts on Character, and Archer Willauer ’16 presented a speech on Scholarship.

Severn School received its NHS charter in 1966. The Jonah Halsted Chapter of the National Honor Society is made up of students in grades 11 and 12. To become and remain a member, a student must:
Evidence character through a regard for others, an exemplary standard of integrity, a willingness to accept and meet responsibilities, and adherence to the spirit as well as the letter of the rules
Demonstrate scholarship by attaining a 3.33 cumulative grade point average and other academic criteria
Perform service to Severn School or to the non-school community
Show leadership in course work or campus life
Mr. Jonah Halsted was an esteemed member of the Severn School faculty for more than 43 years, coming in 1928 as a substitute teacher. Strongly devoted to classroom teaching, Mr. Halsted twice rejected offers to assume the administrative duties of Headmaster. Mr. Halsted is remembered for his unselfish service to Severn School.
