|From the Italian Exchange program to Model UN, Global Civilizations to Advanced Robotics, Severn offerings are classical but diverse - a serious and joyful undertaking for our Upper School students. |
Upper School students are required to take four years of English and three years of History, Math, Lab Science, Foreign Language, at least one year of Fine Arts, and choose from a wide range of electives. There are many opportunities to explore areas of interest beyond the classroom with clubs like Mock Trial, Chess, Music, Community Service, and more.
A MESSAGE FROM THE UPPER SCHOOL HEAD
I am proud and delighted to help lead the Upper School community at Severn School, as we seek to care for and inspire our students intellectually, artistically and athletically, and as we teach character and leadership.
We are a community of learners who take our academics seriously and joyfully. We offer challenging and interesting courses in myriad subject areas in addition to a wide array of honors and AP courses. Students seek to grow intellectually in multiple directions because they have teachers who inspire them.
We are a community of teachers, advisors and coaches who are at Severn School because we care deeply for our students. Our small classes allow us to know and value our students as individuals and celebrate their growth in and out of the classroom. We love learning ourselves and consistently work to improve our teaching and teamwork.
We are a community of artists who paint, sculpt, draw, design, film, sing, strum, dance and act. We offer classes in multiple areas of the arts as well as opportunities outside of the classroom to perform and share out talents and interests.
We are a community of athletes who work hard to improve both our individual skills and our teamwork. We love to balance our commitment to academics with play on the fields; the majority of students participate in more than the one mandatory season of athletics.
We are a community who loves to explore interests in the world beyond us through our many active clubs such as Fed Challenge, Model United Nations, multicultural alliance, community service, math, chess, movie making, Italian, music, to name a few. We are proud to have a two-time national champion Fed Challenge team and state champion Mock Trial and Chess Teams. We are also proud to have students who are trying new activities for the first time.
We are a community of leaders who believe in honor and character development. We have a living and functioning honor code, which was designed by and continues to be upheld by our students and faculty members. We work together to create and maintain a community of trust through teacher/student-run honor and conduct courts.
The mission of the Upper School is to prepare our students for college and life. We believe that students who work closely with their teachers and coaches feel known and valued and committed to their own success. We seek to develop scholarship, character and leadership in every student. Our students are motivated learners and respectful and kind. We are a community committed to learning and each other.
