Head of the Middle School Gray Smith
announced recently that he has accepted the position of Head of School of Harford Day School
in Bel Air, Maryland, effective July 1, 2014.
"Severn is an exceptional school, and I have looked forward to being part of its community every day for the last six years,” said Dr. Smith. “I have had an unparalleled opportunity here to grow professionally and to learn the operational aspects of leadership in a school of excellence. I would like to thank Headmaster Doug Lagarde for his counsel and would also like to thank the Middle School faculty for their commitment to excellence in teaching and learning and for partnering with me during my tenure. I will miss the enthusiasm and curiosity of Severn’s middle schoolers who made my work here so fulfilling.”
Dr. Smith stated that his move to Harford Day School will allow him to continue to grow professionally, taking his next career step in independent school leadership. He is an alumnus of St. Paul’s School and the former assistant upper school head and dean of students at Boys’ Latin School.
Dr. Smith joined Severn School in 2008. During his tenure he carried out a number of important initiatives, strengthening the Middle School’s resources and program. Reviewing and revising the breadth and depth of the Middle School curriculum and focusing professional development efforts on teaching strategies for a technologically savvy generation of middle schoolers were central to Dr. Smith’s tenure. He recently completed his Ed.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
"We are deeply grateful for Gray’s administration in the Middle School and wish him the best as he moves into this next chapter of his career,” noted Severn Headmaster Doug Lagarde.
Dr. Smiths’ final day at Severn will be June 30, 2014.
Headmaster Lagarde has formed a search committee for Dr. Smith’s successor. Throughout its history, Severn School has benefited from strong, inspiring leaders, each of whom has brought creativity, insight and spirit to the job.
