The holidays are around the corner, and to help you with your shopping, the Zimmerman Library crew has compiled a list of great books published in the past year for students in grades 6-12.

CLICK HERE to find a list of novels that have been award winners, honors recipients, and made “best of” lists for 2012.

Each book includes a suggested grade level, but please keep in mind that this is only a suggestion. As always, you are the best judge as to what will be the most appropriate and enjoyable books for your children.

Clarification of Our Cancellation Policies & Introduction of Texting System from Headmaster Lagarde
10/9/2012

A couple of weeks ago in the midst of a Tornado Watch issued for Anne Arundel County, there was some confusion as to the School’s cancellation policies. I write to clarify Severn’s cancellation policies and identify a new way we will communicate with parents and students who are involved in athletic or extracurricular activities after or outside of school hours.
The School Handbook states, “Severn School follows the practice of Anne Arundel County Public Schools for the first day of each weather event and then will make its own determination for subsequent days.” This obviously addresses cancellations when Severn is closed for the school day. It is ambiguous, as we found out, as to how it relates to after school cancellations once a school day is already in progress.

Italian and French Student Exchange Meetings: 10/11
10/1/2012
Italian Exchange Meeting
Thursday, October 11 @ 6:30p
Teel 311 (Dr. Heslin's room)
Refreshments Provided
The Italian Exchange will will once again spend 18 days in Italy over Spring Break. Our students will stay with their host families in the city of Brescia which lies between Milan and Venice. The students will attend classes with their hosts during several days of their stay and take day trips through Brescia, Milan, Verona, and Sirmione on Lake Garda. The students will spend 3 days in Rome visiting sites such as the Vatican, the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Borghese Gallery. They will also spend 2 days in Florence where they will visit the Uffizzi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo, and see great Renaissance art treasures such a Michelangelo's David. The final tour takes the students to Venice for 2 days. Here they will visit St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace, go for a gondola ride, and visit the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello. Last year's cost of $2,700 included airfare, hotels, trains, tours, art galleries, and some meals. The Italian Exchange is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. For additional information, email Dr. Heslin at: t.heslin@severnschool.com.

French Exchange Meeting
Thursday, October 11 @ 7:00p
Teel 313 (Mrs. Townshend's room)
Refreshments Provided

The French Exchange is planning another 8-9 day trip to Brittany and L’école Croix Rouge for the first half of Spring Break. Severn students are hosted by French families in the town of Brest for a week. During our stay we visit the towns of Brest, Quimper, St. Malo and Plougastel in addition to visiting Mt. St Michel and D-Day Beaches in Normandy. Our trip ends with an overnight stay in Paris where we visit the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Students who travel to France then may host their exchange student who will arrive at Severn about two weeks after Spring break. The hosting of the French student is not mandatory, but is always a highlight of the exchange because of the communality that develops between host families. The cost of the trip is very affordable; approximately $1,600 per student, which includes airfare, hotel in Paris and all field trips and meals. Please email Mrs. Townshend at for any additional information.
