| | To be successful, Severn School needs and expects the cooperation of its parents, who must understand and embrace the School’s mission, share its core values, and fully support its curriculum, faculty, and staff. When joined by a common set of beliefs and purposes, Severn School and its parents form a powerful team with far-reaching positive effects on children and the entire School community.
Working together, parents and school professionals exert a strong influence on children to become better educated; they also help them to mature by modeling adult working relationships based upon civility, honesty, and respect.

 | | | | Q. | What are the School’s Major Rules?
| | A. | There are 4 Major School Rules:
1. Be honest and trustworthy 2. Respect oneself and be respectful of all people and property 3. Meet all obligations 4. Avoid association with, the use or possession of, alcohol, non-prescribed drugs, tobacco products, or dangerous weapons at School or School functions.
While formal, written rules are kept to a minimum, all rules at Severn are based on respect for self, respect for others and their personal property, and respect for community. The School expects this respect from its students at all times, whether on or away from campus. Naturally, such respect includes compliance with the rules of another school while we are their guests, and we would expect our students' guests to show a similar respect while on our campus.

 | Q. | How do I know if the School will close due to inclement weather?
| | A. | Severn follows the practice of Anne Arundel County Public Schools for the first day of each inclement weather event and then will make its own determination for subsequent days. For example:
If Anne Arundel County Schools are closed on a Tuesday and are again closed Wednesday and Thursday, Severn will close according to Anne Arundel on Tuesday and make its own call for Wednesday and Thursday
If Anne Arundel County Schools are closed on a Tuesday and back in school on Wednesday and then again closed Friday because of another storm, Severn would be closed both days.
Given that Severn’s population comes from a wide geographic area, at any time, because of the conditions in your area, you feel it is unsafe for your child to travel to school, it is your prerogative to do so. Please notify the School of your intent.
For closing entirely, opening late, or closing early, consult the school website (www.severnschool.com), any Washington or Baltimore television station, or one of these radio stations: WBAL (1090 AM), WLIF (101.9 FM), WNAV (1430 AM).
Also, we are finalizing an agreement for an emergency alert system that will not only alert our families when Severn is closed for a weather event, but also for other emergency communications as well. |

 | Q. | How can I get a message to my child during the School day?
| | A. | While you may certainly leave a voicemail message on your child's cell phone, students may not use their phones during the school day.
Messages phoned in to Upper School students will be placed on the bulletin board just outside the Upper School office in Teel Academic Center.
Middle School students will find messages on the bulletin board outside the Middle School office. The Middle School Administrator, Mrs. Gina Limon, will also usually track a Middle School student to make certain he/she receives his/her message.
It is the student's responsibility to check the bulletin boards outside the division head's offices. |

 | Q. | Is there an after school program for my Middle Schooler? | | A. | Because teachers and administrators must use after-school time for extra help, meetings, and administrative tasks, they are not available to supervise children. Therefore, unless a child is in After School Study Hall (see below), extra help, at sports practice, watching a game, or in a special activity supervised by a faculty or staff member, such as decorating for a Social, s/he must be picked up promptly after school. Unsupervised time spent “hanging around” campus or downtown Severna Park is not in a Middle School child’s best interest.
AFTER SCHOOL STUDY HALL
- The program is 5 days a week, from 3:20 – 5 p.m.
- Mondays-Thursdays is a study hall. Students may play games when their homework is completed.
On Fridays, games are offered in the Bauer Dining Hall in McCleary Student Center.
- The program is not held on early dismissal days or during exams.
- The Dining Hall is open from 3 - 3:15 p.m. for students to purchase snacks from the vending machines and cafe
- Students who are on campus after 3:20 p.m. and not involved in a structured activity such as extra help, attendance at a game or music program, will be placed in the program and parents will be billed for the service.
- The charge for the program is $80 per month for full time (10 times or more per month) and $8 per day for drop in use (less than 12 times per month).
- There will be an additional $12 charge for late pickups (after 5 p.m.).
- If you have questions or concerns, please contact Program Coordinator, James White (410.647.7701 ext. 2228)
EXTENDING AFTER SCHOOL CARE FROM 5-6 P.M.
In addition to the After School Program we offer, students needing an extended hour program may sign up for the Woods Community Center After School Program. Severn’s After School Program Coordinator would walk your child over to Woods at 5 p.m. for their program, which ends at 6 p.m.
Please understand that anyone choosing to use this option is contracting directly with Woods Community Center for their service. This program provides a safe, supervised, and enriching after school environment that meets the developmental needs of middle school age youth.
The program is open until 6 p.m. each day that public school is open. Participants in the program will choose from a variety of activities, both indoor and out, that may include games, arts & crafts, social conversation, sports, and limited TV. The cost is $15 per week for the 5-6 p.m. time and requires registration to secure a spot (410.647.5843). Space is limited.

 | Q. | Is my student allowed to park his car on campus during the school day?
| | A. | PARKING ON CAMPUS
Policies
- SAFETY – at all times, but especially at arrival and dismissal times each day and after athletic/special events on campus must be the focus.
- All students, regardless of grade level, who live a reasonable distance to the campus are encouraged to walk or ride a bike to school. All Severn families/students are encouraged to carpool.
- One vehicle per Severn family parking on campus for a regular school day (i.e. siblings may not drive separately and take two spaces.)
- ONLY juniors and seniors are authorized to drive to school and park in the student parking lot.
Parking Assignments
- Faculty/Staff: Water Street (east end), Maple Avenue (parallel parking), Boone House parking lots, Holly Avenue (parallel parking)
- Seniors and Juniors: Holly Avenue student parking lot. NO PARKING along curbs in the parking lot; emergency vehicles cannot enter if your vehicle is located in these areas. No parallel parking on Maple or Holly Avenues. Seniors must register their vehicles with the Upper School Dean of Students.
- Sophomores: Due to the limited spaces available, sophomores may not drive to school and may not park on campus. They may apply for parking permits at the end of the school year when Seniors have left for ISPs or have graduated.
Traffic Flow
Water Street will be one-way traffic (west to east) from Maple Avenue to Holly Avenue from 7 - 8:30 a.m. and again from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Please enter campus at the Maple Avenue entrance for all pickups, including those after athletic events.
Please do not block Maple Avenue by creating two lanes turning into Water Street as you drop-off or pick-up your passenger(s). Safety, patience, and courtesy are required as one maneuvers around our crowded campus roadways.

 | Q. | Why is it that most of the mail I receive from the School is addressed properly, while others are not?
| | A. | Severn School has different database systems and, while we all work hard to communicate address changes and corrections, there are exceptions. Please be sure to inform the School of any address, phone, or email changes.

|
 | Q. | Does my student athlete have to sign some sort of agreement? | | A. | You're referring to the Athlete Code of Conduct. While the following code is not formally binding, the behavior outlined is encouraged and considered to be appropriate for Severn School athletes.

 | Q. | How can I buy a brick for the Alumni Walkway?
| | A. | As the central passage through the campus, the Alumni Walkway is dedicated to all those who have come before, are with us today, and have yet to be named as Severn School alumni. Bricks inscribed with the name of an alumna/us, current student, faculty member or administrator (past or present), may be purchased at the cost of $150 each.
This is considered a tax deductible contribution. Click here for a downloadable order form or contact Ms. Holly Carroll at 410.647.7701 ext. 2260.
