Admirals are Ready to Compete as the Winter Sports Season Begins

The Winter Sports season is here! As anticipation builds for this exciting lineup, we asked the Head Coach of each varsity team to share what they’re expecting as the season unfolds.
Severn School will compete in the MIAA “B” Conference in Boys’ Basketball (JV and Varsity), and Wrestling (JV and Varsity). Girls Basketball (JV and Varsity) competes in the IAAM “B” Conference. Severn’s swim team includes both a girls’ and a boys’ squad and they compete with the “B” Conference of the IAAM and MIAA, respectively.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball
Head Coach: Mike Glasby
2022-23 Record: 19-11

Outlook for the 2023-24 Season:
We will be a young team with plenty of potential.  Our varsity returners from last year have been steady production leaders in years past.  Our new varsity players are inexperienced but have utilized the summer and preseason to begin developing chemistry and we have high hopes for a successful season.

Players to Watch:
  • Kingston Price, 6'1 Senior Guard, previous two time ALL MIAA B-Conference selection and Capital Gazette ALL County Selection (21-22 and 22-23 Seasons). Price averaged 16.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assist in 2022-2023.
  • Jacob Randall, 6'3 Junior Guard, 2022-2023 ALL MIAA B-Conference selection.  Randall averaged 15.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals last season.
  • Other Varsity Returners: 6'5 Senior Forward Bo Fowler, 6'3 Sophomore Guard Sean Harvey, and 5'10 Sophomore Guard Jayden Thomas.
Final Thoughts: Outside of MIAA B Conference League Play the competitive varsity schedule will include the following non-conference games, tournaments and showcases:
  • Calvert Hall (Home)
  • Mt. St. Joseph (Home)
  • St. Andrew's (Potomac, MD)
  • Deborah Floyd Memorial Classic (Clinton, MD)
  • Bullis Holiday Classic (Potomac, MD)
  • Broadneck (Home)
  • Mid-Atlantic Basketball (Bowie State University)
  • Norfolk Collegiate (Norfolk, VA)
  • MLK Hoops For Harmony Showcase (York, PA)
  • Sandy Spring Friends School (Home)
Catch them in Action: The Varsity Boys’ Basketball is hosting Archbishop Spalding for a scrimmage on November 20 at 4 p.m. The team’s first non-conference game will take place on November 28 at home, against Calvert Hall.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball
Head Coach:
Sharnae Hunt
2022-23 Record: 9-15

Outlook for the 2023-24 Season: Our team is on the up and up! We have a lot of potential with many well rounded players; I believe we will be very competitive this year. We also have a couple of new teams on our roster that we have never played so I think this year will be exciting to say the least.

Player to Watch:
Nyela Djossou '24 is our only senior and has been a crucial player for our women's program over the past couple of years. She is a dedicated player and team leader who has made sure to stay in the gym throughout the off-season. The coaching staff and fans are eager to see how she performs in the upcoming season.

Catch them in Action: The Admirals will host Beth T’Filoh at November 16 at 5:30 for a scrimmage. The first official game of the season is scheduled for November 29, at home against Indian Creek.

Varsity Swimming – Boys’ and Girls’
Head Coach:
Erin Domenech
2022-23 Record: Girls: 4-3; Boys: 9-0; both squads earned 2nd place in the Championship meet.

Outlook for the 2023-24 Season: With 38 girls and 15 boys we will continue with a dedicated and passionate team. We will continue to strive for personal records and push each other to reach their full potential.

Swimmers to Watch:
  • Aliza Monaldo (SR)-won the 500 freestyle in the Championships, earned IAAM All-Conference team honors, was the team MVP the past two seasons, and plans to swim in colleg.e
  • Kenzi Getz (JR)-won the 50 freestyle in the Championships, named to IAAM All-Conference team
  • Kiernan Robinson (SR)-strong performances-100 freestyle and 200 individual Medley
  • Court Barrett (Soph)-strong performances-200 freestyle and 100 backstroke
Final Thoughts: This year’s roster includes seven new freshman on the girls’ team and three new freshman swimmers on the boys’ team. We look forward to seeing how this new class contributes!

Catch them in Action:
The Admirals season begins on November 17 in a meet against John Carroll at 4 p.m. at the Spy Aquatic Center.

Varsity Wrestling
Head Coach:
Tom Wheeler
2022-23 Record: 6-4

Outlook for the 2023-24 Season: We have a relatively young team with talent spread throughout the entire lineup. Our freshmen class will add to our depth and provide an influx of wrestling acumen to weight classes where we were previously lacking. The seniors put some of the best leaders I have seen and they will help the lower classmen navigate the grind of the season.

Wrestlers to Watch:
  • Aidan Shenck ‘24: Senior captain. Aidan is a 4-year starter who was state ranked throughout 2022-23. His season ended due to injury last year and he is looking to make a big splash this season.
  • Nick Melfi ’25: 2-time state placer. Nicky has invested in the sport and looks to climb the ladder of state placement this season.
Final Thoughts: This team is a season removed from winning back to back MIAA B-conference team titles, so we are looking to get back on track and have a strong showing in 2023-24.

Catch them in Action: The Admirals will host Friends for a home meet on December 6 at 4 p.m.
