Admiral Fans Have Plenty to Cheer About for the Fall Athletics Season

With the fall sports season in full swing, Severn’s Head Coaches offered some insights into their teams and what fans can anticipate from the Admirals over the next couple months.
Varsity Cross Country (Boys & Girls)
Head Coach: Skip Sensbach (Assistant Coaches: Kristen Blanck, Sam Brickman)

Outlook for the 2023 Season:
As the new head coach, I’m looking forward to working with the many talented runners on the Severn Cross Country team. The team is dedicated and works hard. We have many new freshmen that have joined the team this year. I’m excited to coach this young team and continue the tradition of fostering a running culture centered around competition and the love of running.

Team Highlights:  Severn Boys Cross Country won the “B” Conference MIAA Championship in 2021 and 2022. The Girls Cross Country Team won the 2021 IAAM “B” Conference Championship, and last year they went 6 -2 in the regular season.

Players to Watch: This year we retained our top boys’ runners: Erik Maltz ‘24, Timmy Wright ‘25, and Doug Schwartz ‘25. Our top female runners, Ella Foote ‘25 and Whitney Grimes ‘24 are also returning. We are also excited about the addition of Emma Patrick ’26 to the Girls’ team. Patrick had a stand-out freshman year in Track and Field. These seasoned upperclassmen will round out a young promising team.

Up Next: The first meet for Severn’s Girls team is set for September 13 at St. Paul’s School for Girls. For the Boys’ Team, first up is a multi-school meet at Anne Arundel Community College on September 20.

Varsity Field Hockey
Head Coach: Giovanni Gordon
2022 Record: 5-10

Outlook for the 2023 Season:
This varsity squad is a young and very skillful group of athletes who are looking to continue the good passing game that was developed last season, and improving our number of goal scored.

Players to Watch:
Seniors Tori Miller and Jess Wilson are both strong midfielders for the Admirals.

Up Next: The Varsity Field Hockey team takes on Crofton High School on September 7.

Varsity Football
Head Coach: Demetrius Ballard
2022 Record: 7-3, MIAA “C” Conference Champions

Outlook for the 2023 Season: We are returning 15 starters and look forward to defending our C conference championship.

Players to Watch:
  • Bo Fowler ’24 - offensive lineman, committed to play with the University of Richmond
  • Alan Scheffers ’24 - Offensive Lineman
  • Jack Hayman ’24 - Offensive Lineman
  • Daniel Growney ‘25 - WR
  • Charlie Runco ’26 - LB/RB
  • Julius Floyd ’26 -LB/RB
Up Next: The Admirals will travel to Meade High School on September 8.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer
Head coach: Denison Cabral
2022 Record: 11-6 (Conference: 8-1; advanced to IAAM “B” Conference semi-finals)

Outlook for the 2023 Season:
I am looking forward to a great season. I was very impressed with the group during tryouts -- the players showed up ready to compete and with a lot of enthusiasm about the season. The level of competition is getting stronger every year and we are expecting a very competitive season for everyone.
It’s too early to say who will be the top teams, but we will face everyone with the same focus, respect, and determination. We expect to see some great  young players. We will have a very competitive team. We want to finish on top and fight for the title.

Players to Watch:
  • Nia Hudson ’25 (Forward): She is a great finisher and very aggressive player.
  • Eli Valencia ‘25 (Midfielder): She is a great technical player who understands the game really well.
  • Caroline Bing ‘24 (Midfielder): She brings great experience and hard work to the team and we can expect more of that from her.
Up Next: The Varsity Girls Soccer team will compete against Bryn Mawr on September 13.

Final Thoughts:
This is a great group of players. They know about their potential and are prepared to compete for the title this year. You can see and feel the energy at practice – this group is going to be fun to watch on the field representing our school.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer
Head Coach: Mike McCarthy
2022 Record: 17-0, captured the second straight MIAA “B” Conference Championship

Outlook for the 2023 Season: As returning champions (again) in the B Conference, the Admirals will look to continue to play competitive, developing as individual players and as a team.

Up Next: Catch the Varsity Boys Soccer team this Friday, September 8 at home against North County High School.

Varsity Girls’ Tennis
Head Coach: Keith Patrick
2022 Record: 11-3

Outlook for the 2023 Season:
After the graduation of 3 Seniors from last year’s team, Severn has 8 Seniors returning this fall. Five of those student-athletes played varsity last year and we hope they can lead the team with their experience. Having 20 players this fall seeking to make their mark with Severn Tennis is also a positive indicator for the team.

Players to Watch:
I expect Amelia Robinson ‘24 to play good tennis at #1 singles and be a leader for the others. Adele Hlousek ‘24 and Claire McNitt ‘24 should provide more skill at doubles or potentially #2 singles if needed. Adele won the doubles championship last year during the finals and Claire also contributed well last season. Also look for Alexa Wahba ‘24 and Elianna Nicole ‘24 to make a move to jump up a spot in the lineup.

Past Season Highlights:
Nia Savana ’23 and Adele Hlousek ’24 were undefeated in match play in the “B” conference and won the #1 Doubles championships. Their only loss came to an “A” conference opponent.

Up Next: Catch the Girls’ Tennis team at Severna Park High School on September 12 against John Carroll.
